Default JMM v. Mayweather Talks underway

This is from Dan Rafael's blog today on ESPN.COM/Boxing:

On Sunday, I spoke to Golden Boy Promotions' Richard Schaefer, who promotes Marquez and was involved in promoting Mayweather's last two fights (against Hatton and, in the richest fight in boxing history, Golden Boy boss Oscar De La Hoya).

Schaefer said he was going to work on trying to make a Mayweather-Marquez fight, which likely would take place somewhere between 140 and 147 pounds.
I spoke to Schaefer again on Thursday, and he reiterated that he was serious about trying to put the fight together and has been in touch with Mayweather adviser Al Haymon.

"I'm serious. Marquez is serious," Schaefer said. "Marquez actually held a press conference [Wednesday] in Mexico City, and he was clear that he likes to take on the biggest challenges. And it's obvious Pacquiao is running from him, so he has his sights set on Mayweather, who he considers the best pound-for-pound fighter. He said if Mayweather is serious about fighting, he should come out of hiding and let's fight."

Mayweather (39-0, 25 KOs), who turned 32 on Feb. 24, recently told his advisers, Haymon and Leonard Ellerbe, that they were free to listen to offers for fights, leading many to believe it would be only a matter of time before he laces up his gloves again.

Conventional wisdom says Mayweather, who turned down an overture to face Shane Mosley in the wake of his January knockout of Antonio Margarito, may be waiting for the outcome of Hatton-Pacquiao and is interested either in a rematch with Hatton or a showdown with Pacquiao, the man who replaced him atop the pound-for-pound list. Now, Marquez may be in the picture as well. It's certainly an easier fight to make than one with Pacquiao, who is promoted by Top Rank's Bob Arum. Mayweather and Haymon have had a serious falling out with Arum.

Schaefer said he had a preliminary conversation with Haymon about a Mayweather-Marquez fight this week.

"I started having a conversation with Al [after] the Houston fight," Schaefer said. "He said, 'Let's see if this is something we can put together.' So I'm going to see if we can put that fight together. I will try to get it done. If Mayweather is serious about coming out of retirement, I think it's a good fight for him and a big challenge for Marquez. He's never backed down from any challenge, and to take on Mayweather is no easy fight."

I hope for JMM's sake that it is as close as possible to 140. The higher the weight the more advatantge PBF has. Even at 140 i have trouble seeing JMM beating Floyd if he is near his best.

It may very well come down to Pacquiao vs. Hatton. You can smell it,the way Marquez stepped right out and called on Mayweather Sat.Mayweather may just be getting that itch.....Should Pacquiao take Hatton impressivly,Mayweather considers Marquezs age, added weight at 140 and Marquezs Pac connection looking to the much talked about Mayweather/Manny showdown ??Personally I dont think JMM should even think about 140,one step too many at this point. But with the career high hes on,not a young guy anymore he might just go for the big finale.I dont doubt that he really thinks he can win it...?

I think most of the boxing world would doubt Marquez's chance against Mayweather but that doesn't mean it'd be one hell of a fight and who knows, Marquez looked damn good the other day against Diaz and brought it back after being throttled a few rounds with a great KO. I'm not saying Diaz has the ability of Mayweather but, Marquez is still in with a shout.

I'd definitely pay to watch it, who wouldn't?

Think the others could be right about him waiting for the winner of the Hatton/Pacquiao fight though, that would be a huge fight no matter which one he faces.

i see it more as using it as a stepping stone towards the winner of Pacquiao/Hatton, makes a splash by fighting Marquez in his comeback fight later part in the year, then takes on Pacquiao if he wins against Hatton in early 2010

This is just a publicity thing from GBP to put JMM in the mix. Why do you think PBF will fight JMM? What does JMM brings to the table for Floyd Jr.? The lightweight belts? Naahhh... PBF won't even fight JMM at 140... Remember PBF didn't even give that chance to Hatton... PBF fought Hatton at 147 where he has all the advantages... PBF is the man at that time so he has the final say...

GBP is just throwing a weak counter to Top Rank's planned PAC vs. Cotto fight if PAC demolish Hatton on May 2...

umm you mean the fact that since last Saturday Pacquiao's hold at #1 p4p is much in doubt by a lot of fans and sportswriters, seeing how many consider Marquez now the #1 p4p fighter in the world, and how if he does fight Marquez and beat him, he can once again scoop up 2 HUGE PPV fights back to back being against JM Marquez and then against the winner of Pacquiao/Hatton, that enough of an explanation for you? oh wait, if i don't mention Pacquiao as the MAIN reason well it doesn't make sense to you

JMM was not declared officially as the new P4P #1... Even Ring Mag still has JMM at #2 behind PAC so GBP can't use that to lure PBF... And I think a PBF-JMM fight at 147 will not make big money on PPV... JMM will be so much an underdog in that fight and fans think it's not even competitive... PBF will have all the advantages...

All Marquez wants is the biggest fights. He wanted to fight Pac again. But Pac ran to face the D level David Diaz. Why you trying to bad mouth somebody for looking for the biggest fights?

I dont want to see JMM above 135 and definately not above 140. Hes at too much of a disadvantage against the top guys at 140 or 147. I think the whole Manny-Oscar thing made every fighter think that they can bounce around weight and be sucessful, but I think that fight was a rare case. If Floyd wants to fight another undersized fighter instead of fighting Shane I think hes going to get a lot of sh@t for it and hell have it coming. I Floyd-JMM was proposed a year ago before the Pac-ODLH fight people would be outraged just like they were for that fight.

yea that's why if it does happen it will be at 140, and hell how is Ring Mag suppossed to have Marquez at #1 yet, the fight was just last Saturday , and honestly JMM has looked a lot more impressive in his last few fights against better opposition than Pac, DLH is shot, Casamayor had just KO'd Katsidis, David Diaz should have lost his little belt to Morales and was given a gift decision, then had a draw if i remember correctly in his very next fight against garbage, Juan Diaz lost to a very game Nate Campbell, than was stopped by the "smaller" Marquez, real question is, what has Pac done since moving up to 135 to deserve being called the best fighter p4p?

Did I bad mouth JMM?? Props to JMM for chasing the big fights but I'm just presenting the fact that JMM has nothing to offer for the big boys like PBF... JMM doesn't have the huge fanbase of a Hatton or a Pacquiao... JMM is too small to compete at 147... All JMM has is his excellent technical boxing skills but PBF has plenty of that so JMM can't really claim a competitive fight specially at 147...

Jmm is great as is shane..both are long in the tooth and looking for that retirement fund fight..either one is a good choice money wise for floyd, but JMM stands about as much chance as PAc against floyd..which is to lose a UD or possibly be stopped because floyd did kayo the already bigger hatton.

was strong enough to take Pacquiao's shots, then come back to beat his ass around and then get robbed in the rematch, and hell if people were willing to see Pacquiao Vs Diaz on PPV i'm sure they'll be willing to pay to see Marquez Vs Mayweather at 140 on PPV
