Thread: Prospects That Get Too Much Publicity And Hype

I think it is important for any up and comer to get his name out there and build a fan base. There are some young fighters though that I am tired of hearing about. Thats not to say they arent any good and dont deserve recognition, its just that it can be a little grating. Danny O'Connor comes to mind, Tyson Fury is another one. There are many others too. Again, this isnt a knock on them but I think the press can get a little carried away. I may be wrong and there may be no such thing as too much positive publicity. Any thoughts?

Yuriokis Gamboa. He is fast, slick, and very exciting to watch. Maybe he'll be a world champion this year or next. But I don't see his bright future at 130+ weight class. For a guy that won't be going very far career wise, he's sure is getting a lot of attention.

I cant argue with that, but I do like Gamboa and I see him as one of the genuinely gifted prospects with star potential.

Khan

Most of the boxing great's sons - More recently JCC jr and Hearns....Hearns just lost again and JCCjr will as soon as he steps up...Maybe those guys arent considered prospects?

I agree on Gamboa, alot of hype and shaky whiskers/defense...

Without a doubt Tyson Fury is getting too much attention. The guy is till very very young with only 4 fights. There is no need to hype him up.

I love following prospects along, it sucks when they don't make it, but I think picking out hte special fighters early in their career really shows your boxing knowledge and foresight.

I am yet to be sold on Alexander Povetkin and Odlainer Solis.....they look horrid at times to be as hyped as they have been.

Wladimir Klitschko has done Povetkin a HUGE favor by fighting David Haye first. If Povetkin fought Dimitrenko (a guy who gets too little credit) I think he'd get KO'd. Povetkin doesn't do anything great, he does everything average.

Whatever ever happened to that Tyrone Brunson or Bronson guy. I remember him getting a lot of hype and publicity when he racked up a bunch of first round kayos.

Did he ever break the first round kayo record?

He drew with a guy who lost 5 of his last 6 fights lol. I think that spells the end for his run as a prospect

I see what your saying but we need prospects even if they are good or bad to keep the boxing machine going and too keep the public interested. Although it makes me wonder how other fighters who can have over 30 or more fights never even get an article in a local paper but then a fighter with ten or less has their own endorsements deals. I guess it must be all about the better managent and promoters.

Thats the thing. For every prospect that gets the special treatment for his first pro fight, there are probably 100 hard working journeyman fighters who may make a few grand at best and never get the boost that some of these guys do even though they may have had the talent initially. There is definataly a lot of factors that can work for a young fighter to spark public interest. Style, looks, charisma, amateur pedigree*, enjoyable to watch. I think there is also a bit of luck involved too.

I dont think anyone in our sport gets enough publicity or hype really. I get tired of hearing about basketball players and stuff. Boxing is where it is at. We need all of our guys to be on mainstream tv anytime they can.
