Thread: < Fritz Sdunek, underrated as a trainer >

Was thinking here about "Nacho" Beristain and how he's getting up there in age. I started thinking of how much he has contributed to the history of not only Mexican boxing but boxing in general.

I started thinking of other trainers who are often given praise Arcel, Dundee, Cus, Steward, Pee Wee, Brooks, Roach etc. etc.

Then the name Fritz Sdunek popped in my head, I started thinking of how much he has done for the sport and what he's done with boxers such as;
Wlad, Vitaly, Dariusz, Grigorian, Rocchigiani, Mihai, Loewe,

Currently he's got Balzsay, Boystov, Dimitrenko Zbik, Erdei, Alexevee, Gevor among others.

I think Fritz is def. doing things right.
You don't train as many champs and have 20+ title fights under your belt just cause your a good trainer.
He's been involved in boxing since 1968 when he started his amateur career.
He's trained many amateur world champs also and has a stellar career as a trainer in the ams.

Thoughts on Fritz and his work?

Sdunek is one of the best in the business, definitely, I think it is the same with Ulli Wegner, the only problem is that the 2 german guys are mostly working with stabbles in Europe (mostly Sauerland and Universium) and european fighters as well so we don't hear that much about them and neither do the medias underline their work as they are far from our circle of entertainment and news. I am working daylong with german peoples and I can assure you that the stereotype saying that they are meticulous and organized isn't just a stereotype, it is a general fact (as of course being german doesn't make automatically of you somebody organized, of couse). But definitely, these are 2 top trainers with a LOT of world's champions under their belt and they are quite known in Europe, just not much in America for the reasons stated above.

Don't know much about him, but any guy who's trained that many champs must be pretty good, although having a load of champs is a bit easier than it was in the time of Arcel or Dundee as I'm sure Enzo Calzaghe can attest to

Perhaps a bit easier, especially as there is more boxers around but the guy's doing a great job, as I stated, we just don't hear much about him because he works a lot with Universium and european fighters.

He's one of the best trainers in the business.

I remember reading in Ring Mag a few years ago when they mentioned the top trainers in the game they said Sdunek often gets criticized because the fighters he gets are already good when he gets them. But the writer also said at that (championship) level you can't fake being a good trainer.

Perhaps but once again, most of the good trainers get handed the best boxers either by promotional companies or they just go and pick them up.

Well a lot of trainers here are handed talent from the amateurs also.

It's different once your in the pros.

I think Wladimir has done better with Manny than he did with Sdunek...he was really raw under Fritz and routinely gave up his height and reach advantages vs smaller fighters.

I do think Dimitrenko (a Sdunek trained fighter) is a very good contender and if he's fighting Eddie Chambers then I predict a fight similar to Wlad-Byrd I & II.

Fritz is probably the best trainer from Europe/Russia...he's hands down better than Enzo.
