Cool pics man, congrats on making Nationals.
For every story told that divides us, I believe there are a thousand untold that unite us.

So my back might be really fukked.

I`ve been thru a bunch of testing, a 2 hr consult with a sports injury specialist /therapist, and then a 3 day process of trying various light exercises to gage my pain reactions to them. Am now being sent for a MRI or Catscan or whatever to further look for potential disc probs and he thinks it is a high possibility. lower lumbar. That I may have had it for a while but have just been fighting thru the pain, which basically I have...for almost 2 years. i`ve never been pain free.

I really hope this isn`t the case, cuz it will likely mean surgery. It may even be an end to boxing for me. I don`t really know. I just know I am fighting this national championship one way or another. And whatever happens after that happens.

If it comes down to it, and for some reason I can`t fight any more, Ill ofc be disappointed. But I wont be devastated. I have never thought of this as a career goal. i`ve had lots of people tell me i have everything it takes to be a pro, and a good one, but I honestly have no urge for that. I`ve always just wanted to go to the olympics, the highest level of amateur, and then persue a career in medicine. My desire to go into medicine is far stronger then my desire to be a pro boxer.

So yea this has been a shitty last little bit for me. I guess I will find out more after I get the results back from the tests. I go next week for them.

Got good news today, but still have to go for the MRI. Finally making some headway on the back pain and been told by him after latest consult my reactions were good, and not that of a herniation. What he has been guaging in me is leg weakness and likely other things. I had quite a bit of weakness in my left leg in comparison to my right. This was the thing that most troubled him. But it seems to have corrected itself some and likely will more as we continue treatments.

I've had this recurring pain and injury for more then 2 years and it forever flares up. Haven't been or fought pain free for a long time.

This is also the longest I've ever gone without working out. Without doing anything. It is something I struggle with, maybe much like a person with an eating disorder or something. It is hard to get my head around the feeling I am losing out when not training, or stunting my growth in the sport somehow. But I know in a practical sense this isn't true. That the body requires the rest, and forever training and fighting when injured if anything may be holding me back some. It's something I am comin to terms with, tryin to better understand.

I think I am on the right path tho. Won't be strapping on for even sparring or anything until he says I can, and will do as told for a change and not cheat a workout here and there as I often do. It's all a learning process. Often of self.

I was told that I would never work in my field of stonemasonry again mate!
They wanted me to get three lower vetrabrae fused together and I chose not to and lived with insane pain for a number of years even could'nt stand and had to crawl at times. Then I got shown a number of other ways to manage it from the inside out and the underlying 3 or 4 causes and now I lift larger stuff than I ever had before and for the most part Im feeling great; (unless my mind slips backwards and i get down and feel like Im doing it all on my own) Then trouble arises, but I Correct it then and I get back on track. Doctors look at the wear and tear on my L5 and say "you are very lucky".

Thanks Andre. Yea Im still working through the process of mental talk, allowing myself to not do anything training related in the name of healing. It isnt that easy but so far so good. I go again for another treatment tomorrow and the MRI. Feel I'm making progress.

So tonight I stayed home fighting the urge to go to the gym. Woot go me! Fought off the urge. My coach calls me 10 mins ago and tells me there is a CTV (Canadian Television News) crew waiting for me to get there. haha. They are doing a short documentary thingy on me and amateur boxing in Canada and were surprise visiting with cameras filming. I knew they were coming just not when and told them a while ago i'm there on such and such days and times without fail. lol o well...doing it starting Friday I guess.

So had the tv thingy tonight. A 2 hr long them filming and interviewing and threw my back out right in the middle. haha My coach not wanting to let on I was hurt bringing me to a back room to stretch it out all hush hush like to complete the interview...as it hurt so bad I almost puked.

Was told to go easy by my therapist for this but am coming to realize I don't really have that gear. Never have. Only have go hard.

ah well Fuck it. I was due for a party anyway, so hello vodka, goodbye pain.

my back is feeling a lot better. I missed my appointment today with my doc cuz simply forgot about it as was hungover on the vodka christmas partying thingymajigga. d'oh. That stuff is pretty good with cranberry juice actually. Hardly taste it. But yea, feeling better so all this rest might be paying off. Not used to doing nothing...

A friend of mine who works for the CTV (Canadian Television Network) wants to do a documentary thing on canadian amateur boxing and use me the center piece for both local and national coverage. They did one tv brief spot already. I've shared it with a few of you on facebook. Here it is on youtube. It was kinda embarassing actually, the attention I got on facebook and thru our club. Not sure I liked it a lot.

I've been putting it off, the documentary thing, because my back injury might be more serious then just strained muscles that I hoped. And that sux. But w/e...will do what I have to, and one way or another I will be fighting for our National Championship, if even am only at 60-70%. I've been fighting hurt for nearly 2 years now, so one more fight I don't see a problem with. Just kinda sux wont have the fights in for prep like I woulda hoped. hopefully can get well enough to hard spar leading up. If i can get well enough and have a good championship, then I'll prob do the docu thing.

Got a little over 1 week left, as flying out on the 21st and could be fighting as soon as the 23rd. Nationals are 23-28th.

I think I have come to the root of the problem and believe it is in technique. A bit of a flaw in the delivery of a few of my punches that I throw with a lot of force, and end up flat-footed when doing so and the over-extending is causing the repeated muscle pulls, strains, tears, w/e is going on. I just can't seem to stop hurting myself and even if I found the reason, there is not enough time to correct it completely and heal up to be at anything close to 100%. I think if I am 70% that will be good, considering it has affected my cardio training as well as ability to spar prolonged periods.

Am still confident I can win. Will have 2 fights max, 4 of us in my division so basically a semi-final then final for Canadian championship. We'll see.

Oh don't worry bro, my performance will be nothing short of 100% effort and I truly do feel this championship has my name on it. I'm just using this as my vent space, and last night was shit training for an ending and frustrating. That'll change when the adrenaline of comp starts flowing. From here on in it is all rest and healing.

2 weeks ago I was sparring a wide range of opponents with lots of experience and ripping thru all of them, from a pro stand up fighting MMA dude at 230 lbs to an 24 yr old ontario elite gold medalist same weight, and others. I just need to rest to get back to that place is all, and that's what I'm doing now.

Best of luck. I continued to scourge for the info you asked me but there is not much around, either discretion has been assured or they aren't worth of a major worry.

ya bro I know and appreciate it. not much info at all. I do think my strongest competitor is one of the Quebec dudes. we suspected they would set the fights up so that we meet in the final, either putting me in the semis against the weaker QC person or the MB dude so we meet for a good final, but we just found out it is going to be done on random draws. I honestly don't care tho. Is everyone else around me that is getting worked into a lather over the details, my coach, my dad etc. meh I gonna block them all out shortly here.
