Default Fantastic article by Graham Houston on PBF v. Marquez

In the following article, Graham Houston, while heaping praise on Floyd Mayweather for his brilliant display against Marquez, explains clearly why Mayweather will never be completely embraced by american boxing fans.

One line that stood out to me was: "When a boxing match becomes utterly predictable it no longer becomes compelling."

Thing is, I don't think anyone really doubts his skill as a boxer, it's the ability to really want to please the crowd (and that does involve taking risks and upping the chance of getting hit more) that doesn't win him too many friends.

'Trouble was, for me, anyway, he missed the chance to look sensational.'

Why did't he push for the ko? Who knows, maybe he just didn't want to, maybe he respected him enough to have him cross the finish line.

& that's no disrespect to JMM to suggest that PBF could have stopped him, I certainly don't think he was carrying him.

    That sums it up nicely.

He'd definitely have more fans if he had a vicious killer instinct. But nothing will change him now.

Granted its an acquired taste only for the boxing connoisseurs, but I find PBF compelling and entertaining. The only fighters who bore me are the ones who clinch excessively, a tactic that should be policed more (it is a violation no?). That certainly leads to snoozefests.

PBF, in contrast, uses graceful movement as his primary form of defense. Granted this is not as entertaining as watching someone throw power punches or connect with flurries, but its still something to behold. Sweat Pea was similar in style and to see some of the best fighters in the world unable to connect when they are literally standing in front of them, is extraordinary.

I find it more compeeling than some of these amateurish straighforward brawlers, like hatton or gatti, so loved by boxing "connesuers"

    good article.

one-sided fights can be entertaining, but PBF-JMM wasn't all that entertaining. it was intriguing to see the way PBF handled Marquez. but not entertaining.

now Hopkins-Glen Johnson was an entertaining one-sided fight.

So he would have more fans if he put himself in a bigger position to get knocked out? Floyd does have a killer instinct, he just doesn't chase a knockout he lets it come to him if a fighter goes into a fight chasing a knockout chances are he'll get knocked out. Floyd looked for all his ability like he was punishing Marquez and trying to stop him. Maybe Marquez is just that tough because looking at the punch stats it would have KO'd any other man. But Marquez has never ever been stopped and I didn't expect Mayweather to do it.

Lets have a look at who Floyd's list of last opponents is

    Marquez
    Hatton
    De La Hoya
    Baldomir
    Judah

Now Marquez has never been stopped and is one of the toughest guys in the world and even when was almost gone in the first against Pacquiao the first time came back and adapted. I think Marquez has tendancy to be caught cold at times or on a perfect counter but he's never really been the type to stay down once he's adapted to it. He'll get shocked but once the shock is gone so are your chances of knocking him out.

    Hatton he stopped

De La Hoya was in his own weight class and no one would expect Floyd to stop him there

Baldomir, not a moving train with a mac truck on top of it could stop him and Mayweather had a broken hand

Judah we'll never know if he was gonna stop because of that low blow.

But the only fight of those which you could question Mayweather's killer instinct was the Baldomir fight but with a broken hand and anyone with the mentality they could stop Baldomir would be just stupid. But the rest of those fights he was exciting and showed a killer instinct if not to stop his opponents but to wind them down to beating the tar out of them and thats what he does. It may not "always" produce knockouts but Im sure his opponents would have rather he knocked them out instead of punish them.

good article, for once Graham said something that speaks to boxing fans...

still, I cannot understand his statement over Tyson Fury - McDermott fight...each time it's the same thing with Graham, he has no guts to say the truth about biased or wrond decision in boxing. he had 95-95 on tyson fury- Mcdermott fight. and had tons of excuses for notable robberies...

can't stand someone who is afraid to say something against organisation and/or Judges.
