    Default Miguel Cotto Update...New Trainer?

Miguel Cotto Update | Boxing News

Former world champion Miguel Cotto may be hooking up with a new head trainer. Sources have mentioned names like Buddy McGirt, Ronnie Shields and others. Cotto is expected to return on June 12 at Madison Square Garden to challenge WBA super welterweight champion Yuri Foreman. Current trainer Joe Santiago, also the matchmaker of Miguel Cotto Promotions, and conditoning coach Phil Landman will remain on the Cotto staff. “We are seeking opportunities to improve in the corner and to seek the best preparation for the next fights,” said Cotto legal advisor Gaby Peñagar*cano.

Of the two I would go with Shields. While buddy did pretty good in getting Gatti to box more, a lot of his fights seem won on game plans and Cotto's shown a habit of starting fights well and then the plan goes out the window and he winds up getting battered in the later rounds.

At least with shields, he can pick up some head movement and learn how to do his damage on the inside, circle out and not get killed by guys that fights witha faster pace. Cotto's got heart and it sounds like a good match for what Ronnie needs from his fighters.
They want your @$$ beat because upsets make news. News brings about excitement, excitement brings about ratings. The objective is to bring you up to the tower and tear your @$$ down. And if you don't believe that, you're crazy.

there were rumors around here that he's gonna hook back up with Evangelista Cotto, especially after the tragic death of his father

That's a great news and a great decision indeed, I said from the start that choosing his nutritionist was wrong, especially when you have a 5 stars in the opposite corner. I am not that big on McGirt but that would be a good improvement. Ronnie on the other hand is very very good, that would be an excellent pick for Cotto.

Bad decision if he does. Just my opinion but ...Call it a career, if they reunite. Cotto has fundamental flaws that have been reinforced over the years by his uncle. They will be exploited very often unless they hand pick his opponents. Foreman seems safe, but a durable guy that blitzes Cotto with a lot of pressure and punches will cause problems. Pac, Clottey, Cheato... all wore him down eventually..
