    Default Weight Watcher

In the wake of the guzman/funeka weight fiasco (and some recent others like, Mayweather, Campbell, Corrales, Castillo) I have been pooring over a solution to the problem of fighters not making weight. I spent alot of time/effort on this write up, I hope you enjoy.

The commision should require fighters to purchase some type of insurance when the fight is signed. If they dont make weight, the opponent gets his entire purse. Than the idiot who didnt make weight would likely not be able to get insured again and is banned from boxing for life.

What do you think? Any other solutions?

I think it depends a bit. If a guy trains his heart out for months and comes in 1 pound over it seems a bit harsh to not let him fight again. Especially if he has fought many times before and made weight everytime.
It could have an adverse effect if the penalties are too harsh because then fighters will start stripping weight in dangerous ways that will effect their healh.
I do agree tho if someone who has fought at 130 or less pretty much all their life suddenly misses the 135 limit by 9 pounds that a harsh penalty should be handed out cos thats just ridiculous.

I'm thinking the commission should take 25% of the fighter's purse and reward it for his opponent for each pound over the limit, so if he's 4 pounds over, no pay day for that fight.

Hit them where it hurts, which is the fight purse.

Repeat offenders ie Guzman should be punished harshly, especially considering he doesn't seem to give a shit. I couldnt believe this human waste last night. Had the nerve to showboat and act tough during the fight.

Even at the weigh in smiling after 9#'s over the limit was announced, just disgusting.

That's like a six-pack per pound in a Zelenoff fight.

I think all commissions should employ the 30-day before and 7-day before rule.

if you can't make weight with the 24 hour notice deal, then you shouldn't be allowed to sign another fight for that weight again. They gave these guys 24 hours weigh in prior to the fight to avoid these fiascos because they knew these guys were starving themselves down to weight classes that weren't their real weight and them gorging themselves back in a coule of hours.

I think there's massive differences in circumstances. For example you've got things like the Nate Campbell example, where I believe he just physically could not make the weight because of his age and apologised profusely for his unprofessionalism afterwards. I'd let something like that go. Then you've got situations like Mayweather not making a catchweight, while it's a bullshit move, I think when the other fighter who wasn't draining to begin with makes another $600,000 out of it, that's a suitable punishment, particularly when both sides agree to re-write the contract in advance.

However, where I do agree with you is where guys have clearly not even tried to make the weight like Guzman or Castillo, then there should be some kind of more serious punishment. I think that for every pound over the weight they are, they give up 10% of their purse to the other guy. That would have left Guzman with just 10% of what he was originally guaranteed. I also think that they should to compensate the other fighter for all training costs, which in cases like Guzman or Castillo would leave them with fuck all and rightfully so.

Guzman is a disgrace to boxing..not honoring the weight limit is just ridiculous..he can't be considered as a Good Champion if he sets that king of bad example...
