Default Punching On The Way Down

Started off in the Dirrell thread:

Let's just hope he doesn't make it through to the next round. He was losing the momentum in that fight and took a dive. It was a harsh call, the DQ, I've been watching loads of old fights and they all used to take a swing as the man was down/ going down. Tyson in particular used to hit on the way down and never got DQ'd.
Yeah I watched one last night actually,

This was fairly brutal too around the 4:30 mark.

I personally think that the Abraham one deserved a DQ though, he had quite a bit of time to stop/not throw the punch. Also I wouldn't be suprised if Dirrell beat Ward!

    That was brutal!

You could even argue that it wasn't the knockdown shot that KO'd him, it was the one the uppercut when he was sat on his ass that put him to sleep.

It's hijacking this thread a little, but there are loads of Tyson on floor shots we could put up. I'd be curious to see how many we could find!
Start a new thread then! I'm sure it will be a good enough topic for it's own thread. Or even have it for everyone rather than just Tyson.

Can anyone think of any other examples of boxers hitting opponents either when down or on the way down?

I think there are about 10 Tyson ones to be found!

Manny Pacquiao hit JMM while he was draped on the ropes on the 3rd knockdown, in there 1st fight.

    RJJ vs Montel Griffin 1.

Riddick Bowe vs Buster Mathis = Riddick Bowe was lucky not to get DQ.

Probably one of the most famous is one where the opponent wasn't actually down but only the ropes/corner were holding him up. That is the fatal fight between Emile Griffith and Benny Paret. Now I know that it all happened very quickly. I think Griffith hit him 18 times in 3 seconds whilst he was in the corner. But could the ref or even Griffith have stopped the onslaught earlier?

Judge for yourself, I personally think the referee could have done something way earlier. Griffith for me was not at fault and when you take into account all the taunting he had received in the build up and the fact he was all but out earlier in the fight, the adrenalin must have been bursting through his body. Thats why the ref should be held responsible IMO.

Yes Paret died after falling into a coma following the fight. I think it was about 2 weeks later, not sure but definitely fatal.

Absolutely. In fact had it happened in this day and age it probably would. It was a very high profile fight at the time. There were so many people being blamed too, but IMO the ref made the biggest mistakes and still I don't know what he could have been thinking.
