Default Gavin Rees v John Watson - British Lightweight title - Nov 6

Saw this one pop up on the news wire just now, and is showing on boxrec too (which is good enough for me).

It's good to see Gav get back on the title trail, and at what I reckon is a better weight for him too. He was always quite a short stocky light welter, lightweight may see him with less of a reach and height disadvantage.

Can't say I know much about John Watson, but beating Martin Gethin certainly does him credit. 13-0, 5KOs doesn't suggest massive punching power, but hopefully he'll be decent enough and give Rees a decent test.

This looks a cracking little fight. Anyone have a strong view?

I think Rees gets some unfair stick, he has an effective rat-a-tat style, this weight should suit him (as rhun said) and i'm dying to smash into him (doshwise) but a bit worried about Watson being pretty unexposed.

    Thoughts?

Just saw the weigh-in pics, he looks good. Stoppage looks a bit of value although i'm always worried about unexposed types

That pic from the weigh-in has added to my confidence in Rees for this fight...you can actually see his abs!

Since he gave up his boxing and moved to training, I've seen a few of Gary Lockett's guys fight, and fitness and stamina hasn't been a problem, and it looks like Gav's been through that programme too. Looking forward to it, Cook v Jones should be an interesting welsh dust-up too.

Nice knockout by Jason Cook there, he looked like he was going to be too slow, but once he went to the body shots he started to break Jones' heart. Clearly the harder puncher, and the way Jones got up shaking his head, you knew he wasn't going to be in there much longer.

The fans are chanting 'easy', and so far it has been. Even the overhand right from about a yard behind Rees' shoulder landed big. Rees is landing good shots, beating Watson to the jab, and the body shots are hurting. Watson showing a little more in the fourth, but Rees is still landing much more.

First round of the fight to Watson, and he needs the next five to tie on my card. That nose looks a bit of a mess for Rees too. Hope he's got and experienced guy in that corner. Still think Rees has got it, just needs to go back to the good work of earlier.

Rees is completely f***ed, but that was a beautiful right hand that's probably put him in the ascendancy. Now Watson's hanging on. Gwan Gav.

I don't think that Watson ever recovered from that short counter right, even after a minute in the corner. Good stoppage I thought, as Watson wasn't really able to keep Rees off. If Watson hadn't have frozen early doors it might have been different, but Gavin had the big lead already stowed away, but Watson was coming back. Would be interesting to see what the judges had for that fight going into the tenth before Gav nailed the knockdown.

I was ringside at the fight and was taken pictures of the fighter as they got ready in the changing rooms.

    Great night.
