Default What I learned from last night's fights

    1. Although HUGELY disappointed by JuanMa's loss, I know he'll be back soon enough. He needs to work on his defense, but his offensive firepower and heart will always be there. Congrats to Salido, who was the better man last night. I thought the stoppage was correct. JuanMa was taking too many shots.

    2. Amir Khan gets limited credit for his win over McCloskey. McCloskey looked like a rank amateur in there, and would be KTFO'ed by any decent fighter. Sorry.

    3. I'm a new fan of Victor Ortiz. I wanted BADLY for Berto to lose, and lose he did. No thanks to Ortega, who insisted on penalizing Ortiz for everything but breathing. The point deduction for hitting behind the head was laughable. Oh..... and Berto gets the Oscar for "Best Acting Job" after that shot WHICH HE PRACTICALLY DUCKED INTO. I'm so glad he lost. Great fight, though!!

    4. Larry Merchant had his days, but he should now retire as quickly as possible. He's about two interviews away from slurring and babbling. Berto looked like he couldn't wait to get away from Larry's babbling an into a well-deserved rest and shower in the locker room.

    5. Mayweather got more air time than the fighters themselves. I would've rather seen more of the ring girls.

There's probably more, but that's all I can think of at the moment.

I could not agree more. Lopez could of made that fight so much easier on himself if he would have just boxed and taken his time. Instead he dives into a slug fest that he should not have. Salido was landing shots from the bleachers. Those kinds of punches should not be connecting.

Not sure what Paul was trying to do in there outside of nothing. A poor strategy was used as it looked like he bought into the land the one punch to change things hypothesis. Not to knock Khan but that ending almost looked predetermined. That cut was a scratch.

That makes two of us. Any doubt I had on the kid was quickly vanquished last night. I've always maintained that Berto is kind of a poor mans Shane Mosley that gets hit more. Great fight it sure was.

Lol. I think he's been done for a couple of years now but all parties involved are having issues with making the split.

    5. Mayweather got more air time than the fighters themselves. I would've rather seen more of the ring girls.

Yeah the anticipation on what he is going to next is unwavering. Maybe he will fight Ortiz

I hope you don't mind me responding in this manner inside the quote. Anyway interesting stuff.

    No problem, bro.......

Thanks for your feeback. All in all, a great night of boxing... although like I said, I was incredibly bummed out about JuanMa's loss.

I learned that Juanma better stay away from Gamboa if he wants to recover, Arum was probably pissed that fight went out the window.

Oh....... one big one I forgot to mention......

Last night I learned that not a lot of old-timer boxing fans text into boxing polls during fight telecasts. Last night's poll was about who was the greatest all-time Puerto Rican fighter. The results, although I don't remember the percentages, were (in order):

    1. Felix Trinidad
    2. Miguel Cotto
    3. Wilfredo Gomez
    4. Wilfredo Benitez
    5. Ivan Calderon (?) I think he was in there, but I'd had too many beers by then.
    6. Carlos Ortiz

I love Cotto, but no way he rates above Gomez or Benitez, two of the very greatest of all time. Gomez still holds a few boxing records, and also holds one of the very best knockout ratios of all time as well. Wilfredo "El Radar de St. Just" Benitez is and will always be the youngest world title holder in the history of the sport, and was a defensive grandmaster, with a little power to boot, as well. If Calderon was truly on the list, I don't rate him that high either. There's plenty of past Puerto Rican champions that could've been on that list.

I kind of expected those results, though. It stands to reason that most texters are more familiar with the recent generation of fighters.

    Thanks bro.... I appreciate that.

I'm still hurting from the JuanMa loss.... but I'm confident he'll be back with more than a few lessons learned. No questioning his heart, tho. He was still throwing 'till the end, but was getting tagged by almost everything Salido was throwing. Not easy being a ref in there. You'll never make everybody happy.

Funny that you bring that up...I was talking with my friend while the fights were on. He fought pro 1969-1971, trained with Emile Griffith, so he's been around for awhile. His opinion, to paraphrase, was that anybody that doesn't think Carlos Ortiz is the best PR fighter is an idiot. Makes me think I'll go looking for Ortiz (Carlos) fights today.
