Default A Poor Decision By Mares

Here is Abner Mares describing why he made the decision he did not to take a fight Saturday.

“Fighting someone else on Saturday wouldn’t be fair to Joseph, who earned the right to be in the finals. Fighting Yonnhy or Vic wouldn't be fair to either of them. Why should one get the opportunity over the other? Avalos is a good young fighter, but he hasn’t paid his dues to be in a main event like Saturday was supposed to be.

    Respectfully Abner...ARE YOU NUTS?

This is about YOU, not anyone else. You've had 21 pro fights, YOU NEED THE WORK. Nobody gets better not fighting. Yohnny clearly has a justifucation Vic doesn't He got a draw with you, Vic lost. Don't want someone quite that tough on short notice? Fine, fight Avalos, beat him up, get rounds in, learn a little more and stay sharp. It's too bad about Agbeko, but that's not your problem, there is no telling when he'll be ready.

Human beings get better the more they do something. It's not very complicated. You've had only 20ish fights. You have a LOT to learn and passing up a chance to fight and improve after you've put in a pile of work is just D-U-M-B DUMB!

A rematch with Perez would have been great. And this Avalos fella coulda fought Vic.

He's right Avalos would have got his ass kicked, not worthy competition at this point. I'd rather see the Martin kid that beat Avalos than that fight.

I find it hard to blame Mares here. He trained for a specific opponent in a big fight and then everything fell apart with only a few days notice. It's not his fault Agbeko pulled out.
