Default May 5th Mayweather Sweepstakes...who's next

Read an article from Ring magazine talking about who Mayweather should/could fight next, their top 3 picks are:

    1. Sergio Martinez
    2. Amir Khan
    3. Victor Ortiz

Except for the Ortiz fight I think either 1 or 2 are great fights, I would be especially curious to see Amir fight Mayweather because of the speed of Khan.

**They also mentioned a wild card fight that could come up, James Kirkland. The article reads:

"This fight makes more sense than many might realize. Think about Kirkland’s recent performance against Alfredo Angulo. Compare it to Victor Ortiz and his with Andre Berto back in April. Think about where both fighters were. Think about HBO’s investment in each, and their similar nature in how the network has pushed each. It’s a very similar situation. Considering that, one wonders if Floyd’s team are thinking in a similar fashion."

What are your thoughts on any of the 3 foes, minus Ortiz??
    The key is Self-discipline.

It'll be the winner of Ortiz and Berto.

yea you know Pacquiao's not gonna be on that list, him and his team are already bitching out, looking for a 4th fight with Marquez, if he was so sure he won the fight why the fuck is he and Arum so hell bent on the 4th fight

Id love to see mayweather v the winner of cotto v margarito 2, im not saying either of em would beat mayweather, i just think floyd wud have a hard time as they're both big guys, both hit hard, cottos quick and margarito will walk through punches to land a bomb, it would be great viewing!!

Mayweather would be nuts to fight Kirkland IMO, unless he made him fight at 147. Kirkland may not have a chin, but he can box a little bit and he hits hard. It's the definition of a high-risk, low-reward fight.

I could see it being Berto if he beats Ortiz, which he will, or Khan. Both would be okay fights. 147, Pacquiao and Mayweather aside, is shit right now.

I would think Bradley would be a likely candidate if he wasn't an Arum fighter now, but that would be an awful fight.

I would have loved to see either of those fights about 5 years ago, but not now.

If Ishida can put Kirkland down thrice, Mayweather can too. That is actually a great fight for Mayweather. Kirkland is coming off a huge victory, it would be at 154, so people would think it was a risk and Mayweather knows Kirkland can be outboxed. At the same time, Mayweather can fight anyone at 80-20 and people will buy the fight regardless of whether it is on paper a competitive fight. He could fight Guerrero or Maidana and people would buy it so I'm not sure why he would fight Kirkland when those kinds of opponents are available.

Is a victory over Angulo huge though? I think most people, myself included, have long considered Angulo to be a pretty mediocre fighter. It was a great win for Kirkland because it, kinda, showed that he could take a punch (or at least that he could better than in the Ishida fight), but beating Angulo doesn't mean that much in the grand scheme of things.

From what I know, and I could be wrong, Kirkland isn't an overly popular or esteemed fighter right now, so I don't know how well it would sell. I'd watch it though, I think it's a compelling fight, I just don't know if it makes sense from Mayweather's perspective. If I'm him, I'd fight someone like Bradley or Berto/Ortiz. They're more popular and are easier fights.

The only reason to fight Kirkland at 154 is if he's going after Martinez next, and even then I think there are safer and equally marketable fights at that weight.

My issue with mayweather vs anyone is that he honestly cant be beat by any of these guys, not even martinez, martinez is a case of a fighter who looks impressive agaisnt certain guys, mayweather will win, and thats the hardest fight out there for him.

as far as ortiz? why bother? hopefully if berto wins itll atleast be fun to see that, but i say berto gets ko'ed.

Kirlkland, is a sucker for counters, not the first puncher maywaether fought

i would like a cotto fight cuz i am picking him to win(against margarito), but that might be pacqious leftovers in mays eyes

id love a fight with khan, still floyd by ko thou

final thoughts really, itll be fun to watch anyone of these, but dammit i want pacqiou-mayweather and i think we all need to sign a petition for it, those seem to be working lately

Out of all the fights for Floyd at 147, I'd most like to see him fight Khan (aside from Pacquiao of course). I think Khan's hand-speed could give Floyd some issues for at least a couple of rounds.

Floyd doesn't have the balls to fight Martinez for the middleweight title. We all know that. Leonard, Duran, Hearns, De La Hoya, Trinidad, they all came up in weight to challenge two of the greatest middleweight champions of all time.

But, Floyd won't dare do it.

I remember years ago Floyd talked a whole bunch about fighting Winky Wright at 154...then he went and fought a washed up Sharmba Mitchell instead.

I expect a similar outcome here.

The only real challenge on that list is Martinez, but I doubt that ever happens.
Mayweather v Martinez - a REAL super fight.
