Default Catchweight fights you would have loved to have seen made.

I was thinking about Vernon Forrest and Kostya Tszyu the other day.

I know Vernon got schooled in their amateur bout but when pros they were only 7 pounds apart in their prime and both their styles had changed, Kostya more square and ready prove himself a warrior and Vernon more controlling using his reach I would give Vernon more hope of the win if it had of happened. Kostya to go up above 140 in this case.

Can think of more but that one for many reasons would of been good.

    Yours?

None, hate catch weights, we have plenty of weight divisions, pick one.

I agree. Divisions are 7 pounds apart. Just pick one and fight in it.

I dont agree. One reason to allow a catch weight could be to avoid the two fighters losing a title in their own weights and yet supply us with the fight we want to see.

I think concerning say Kostya and Floyd in the 90's a fight at 137 could of been the only way we would of got one between them back then.

Everyone wanted to see that fight back then when Floyd was moving up. Kostya was a weight stripping machine and could bring the power down with him and he wasnt going anywhere out of 140; Floyd knew it so I think the only way he would agree is if Kostya risked more and went down a touch further.

If Team Pac are to believed then you can fight at a catch weight and still have somebody's belt on the line Andre.

Fuck catch weights... they can give fights, but I've seen them exploited by a certain coach too many times now.

Fat James Toney against thin young James Toney. The catch weight for fat James Toney would have to be about 2 pounds lighter than his weight at the moment...basically whatever he can sh** out in a morning.

I work with a light heavy weight boxer (I don't use all caps in posts but if I ever did it would be now). That division in 168-175. I can't tell you how many fights we look at that are negotiated weights. Light heavy that fights to 168-170, 172 max, and the most annoying 175-178 (this is probably the most prevalent light heavy fight right now). So we get a cruiser that couldn't make light heavy on his lightest day claiming to be a light heavy. At weigh in he'll probably show up at 179 or 180 (in smaller fights, you have to fight, too much time and effort in on training and you need the fight too badly not to give up the weight, hopefully you get another 50-100 bucks of his purse) and our guy will be 174.5, forget about fight night. (I'll agree that the 25 pound differential in the cruisers and the 200-225 area of heavy poses some problems but it shouldn't be our problem)

Why would Martinez Mayweather need to be a catchweoght fight? Surely Floyd would go up one division, and Sergio comes back down to meet at 154lb light middleweight.

Isn't that what a catch weight is?
