Default Where is the North/South divide?

I know it means different things in the UK than in the States but in both cases there seems to be a belief that geographical location can dictate character. In Britain Northerners go on about Southrn softies and in the USA southerners seem to be looked at as rednecks and inbred. Where exactly is the dividing line in each case or is it merely a matter of perspective? I am from the South of England right on the border between the two most southerly counties, from my perspective pretty much everywhere is up north.

When people think of the deep south they think of the Southeast. Arizona's in the south technically but nobody thinks of it in connection to Alabama, Mississippi, etc.

As far as where the deep south ends I guess Virginia is kind of the dividing line. It was a major part of the confederacy but it isn't looked at like (again) Alabama, Mississippi, etc.

Even Florida (or large parts of it) is much different than the real deep south. Miami is so different from any place in most of the deep south that it's hard to even compare the two. And then you have the retirees from the northeast.

In England anything north of Watford is the north.

    That's exactly right.
For every story told that divides us, I believe there are a thousand untold that unite us.

I just thought I forgot to include other contries would be interesting to hear Andre's views on Australia. Do you not think that climate etc affect disposition and outlook on life? I think there are regional differences and I love that. I am not so dumb to think that Southerners are more sophisticated than northerners but there are real differences in approaches to life.

Yep theres a difference. When we got daylight savings bought in nationally , a Queensland lady wrote into the papers complaining that she had just bought new curtains and now they will fade faster due to more sunlight each day.

Queensland is bathed in sunshine most of the year thus the boiled brain syndrome we got to see at work here.

They cant even spell beer, thats why they have xxxx on their beer cans.

Tasmania really did once have more inbreds per head per capita. Thats way down south (cooler) more lush, rivers and mountains too.. (shadows of Deliverance).

Sydney and New South Wales have dry lamingtons! (Lamingtons are a 4 inch square spounge cake covered in chocolate topping and dipped in coconut.) An Aussie national treasure.

In Victoria we have a line of jam in ours so all other competitions are off between states, game over, we already won. Aussie rules was born in Victoria and now the other states get people from Victoria to go play on their teams to beat us at our own game . See we cant loose, we are actually playing ourselves.

Darwin way up north in the red earth and sun has an giant alcohol problem.

As you can see, we pull and stretch the line back and forth to annoy anyone with a border mentality.

Beanz in my eye's it's down to people in Britain most of the wealth is in the south east, weather we like it
or not, southern softy no not at all. There are lot's of hard working people in this country, from the tip of
Cornwall to the tip of Scotland. I still feel we are a country with a class divide all way's have been, there
has been rich and poor North south. A poor man in Kent and a poor man in Wigan no diff-rent's still poor
    just were they live.

This is the original demarcation line of North & South in the United States Mason–Dixon Line - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, but I would say that even Virginia is pretty hard to describe as "Southern" these days....the heathens don't even serve sweet tea there!!!

Southern Florida is also "different" .......though I don't much care for Northern Florida either. And the "Southern States" extend all the way to Texas where at some point that becomes the "Southwest" which is a whole 'nother bag of marbles.

We Texans are entirely too egotistical to be considered part of anything besides begrudingly the USA. As far as we are concerned the rest of the country can piss off.

The "Lone Star" in Texas' state flag came from 'The Bonnie Blue' (the flag seen beside my name) which was a flag adopted by 'State's Rights' movements which eventually snowballed into the Confederacy of which Texas was a part.

The Confederate States are considered "Southern" and oddly enough they would have had a political system not unlike the European Union.

Every kid in junior high learns that. Regardless Texas culture and history is decidely unique from its former Confederate brethren.

Watford is within the M25, as a northerner, that is classed as the south. For me the divide starts somewhere around Birmingham, Coventry area. Anyone who lives south of that location are southerners, and soft
