    Tuesday ~ July 8, 1975

    Convention Center ~ Miami Beach, Florida

    Attendance............. 3375
    Gate Receipts ....... $27,100

    * Mike Quarry - 49-6-3 {12 KO's} ~ 5' 11" ~ 174 lbs. ~ {Age; 24 years, 4 months}
    vs.
    * Vernon McIntosh - 30-11-1 {25 KO's} ~ 5' 11 1/2" ~ {Age; 26 years, 3 months}
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    ~ The Skinny ~

    A rematch of their 'War in Orlando' only 5-Weeks earlier.

    Mike Quarry is now ranked as the #9 WBA Light-Heavyweight.

    Vernon 'The Sledgehammer' McIntosh will now be fighting in front of his hometown
    fans.
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    ~ Quarry Stops McIntoish In 6 ~

    ~ Quarry Nails 'The Sledgehammer' By TKO ~

    Mike Quarry unloaded with a 'barrage-of-punches' on Vernon McIntoish in Round 6, sending
    the local bomber 'reeling' backwards and into the Ropes defenseless.

    Referee - Eddie Eckert moved in fast, and called the bout over at {1:58} of the Round,
    giving Mike Quarry a TKO 6 win.

    This was a complete turn-around from their previous bout 5-Weeks earlier, where McIntosh
    got off to a great start.

    This time, it was Quarry who laid out the early leather, that had McIntosh baffled as Quarry
    sent in fast-combinations to both the head and body.

    By Round 5, it was evident that Quarry just had 'too-much-speed' for McIntiosh. After 5-Rounds,
    Quarry had dominated every session, except for the 2nd Round.

    Fight Purses
    * Mike Quarry ................ $5500
    * Vernon McIntosh ......... $3375 {McIntosh received $1.00 for each ticket purchased}

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    The Skinny ~

    Mike Quarry and Pedro Soto will be having a 'rematch' of their wild bout at Madison
    Square Garden 8-Months earlier {December 1974} > where a 'mini-riot' ensued after
    the Decisions was announced in Quarry's favor.

    This bout is part of the 'new' Television Series Boxing {TVS, Inc.} that is sponsored
    by Madison Square Garden.

    Mike fought only 16-Days earlier {June 9th} in Florida against Vernon McIntosh.

    Pedro Soto has only had '1-Bout' since Mike Quarry ruined his unbeaten streak after
    10-Straight wins.
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    ~ Pedro Soto Defeats Mike Quarry In Rough-House Bout ~

    ~ Soto Edges Quarry In Las Vegas - Called 'The Dirtiest Bout Ever' ~

    In what can only described as 'one of the dirtiest bouts ever', New York's Pedro Soto
    scored a 10-Round Majority Decision over #9 World-Rated - Mike Quarry.

    In what was supposed to be a Boxing Match between two young Light-Heavyweights,
    turned into a 'Pier-Six Brawl', with frequent low-blows and flying elbows.

    Young 20-year-old Pedro Soto came out quickly, and used his strength to maul and
    swarm Mike Quarry with 'rough-house' tactics from the Opening Bell.

    In Round 2, Soto landed a 'vicious' left-hook to Quarry's jaw 'dropping' the Orlando-based
    fighter to the canvas. After rising, Quarry was met by a 'rampaging' Soto who came at
    him with 'arms-and-elbows' flailing.

    Soto continued with aggressive attack in Round 3, and used his strength in pounding
    Quarry, who could not keep the strong Puerto Rican off of him. In this Round, Quarry
    was 'warned' for low-blows.

    But Quarry was able to take advantage of his speed in the Round 4, as Soto began
    to slow down his pace. Quarry scored with rapid-fire left jabs to the head, and left-hooks
    to the body on his slowing opponent. Again, Quarry was 'warned' for low-blows.

    In a 'rough' Round 5, Soto went after Quarry with a host of 'illegal tactics', by elbowing
    him in the face, and hitting low several times, bringing several 'warnings' from Referee
    - Mills Lane.

    At the end of Round 5, the Referee deducted {1-Point} from Pedro Soto for continuous
    fouling.

    During Rounds 6 and 7, Mike Quarry was able to score with good left-jabs while he stayed
    outside and on the perimeter. But, each time that Pedro Soto moved in close, he would
    maul Quarry and rough-house him into the Ropes, by using his head, shoulders and elbows.

    This action, caused cuts around both of Quarry's eyes, and drew 'harsh' complaints from
    Mike Quarry's corner.

    In Round 8, Quarry got off to a good start, as he scored with a series of combinations to Soto's
    head and then landed '2' good left-hooks to the body. But again Soto came in flailing forward with both
    with fists-and-elbows.

    As Soto was using his strength to maul Quarry, he slammed in an elbow that opened up a 'gash'
    under Quarry's right-eye. In retaliation, Quarry 'intentionally' slammed in several left-hooks iow
    and under Soto's belt-line.

    Referee-Mills Lane had no choice but to penalize Quarry {1-Point}, and permit Pedro Soto a
    2-minute rest period.

    The 'point deduction' seemed to take the edge away from Mike Quarry, who then went to staying
    way outside and away from the action as Pedro Soto aggressively pursued.

    Soto was the stronger of the two during Rounds 9 and 10, as he continued to 'bull' his way forward
    and inside, and 'rough-punched' Quarry during these '2' sessions.

    Scorecards
    * Judge -Art Lurie ................. 45-45 > 'Even'
    * Judge - Hal Miller ............... 45-43 > Pedro Soto
    * Judge - John Mangriciana ... 46-44 > Pedro Soto

    * The Associated Press ..........45-44 > Mike Quarry

    Fight Purses
    * Mike Quarry .................... $5500 {From Gate Receipts} + {Plus $5000 for Television Fee} = $10,500
    * Pedro Soto ...................... $5500 {From Gate Receipts} + {Plus $5000 for Television Fee} = $10,500

    After Bout Comments

    Referee - Mills Lane >
    "It was by far, the 'dirtiest' fight that I have ever been involved in. I felt bad for Mike in Round 8, as
    Soto really did him 'dirty' by elbowing him under the right-eye. I don't blame Mike for going after Soto
    with all those low-punches. But I had to penalize him a {point}.

    Mike Quarry >
    "Every time that I threw a punch, he threw an elbow. What are you going to do. The Judges said he
    won, and that's it. He won, and I lost. That's the verdict."

    "As for a 3rd-Bout with him {Pedro Soto}. I would do it, but I don't think the Promoters or Television
    people would want it. I sure as Hell wouldn't want it if I were them."

    ~ Mike Quarry - Burning Himself Out ~

    Mike Quarry, the #9 WBA ranked Light-Heavyweight is on a pace to burn himself
    out by the age of 25.

    Now, with a record of 50-7-3, Mike {Age; 24 years, 5 months} has '60-Bouts' under his
    belt, nearly enough for '2' full careers as a Professional boxer.

    In the past 9-Months {since November 26, 1974} > Mike has had '9' rough bouts in
    compiling record of 7-2-0.

    Along the way, Mike has been 'floored' twice in those bouts, but has also been 'staggered'
    numerous times, and cut badly over his 'problematic' left-eye in several of these bouts.

    Just 3-days after fighting {and losing} to Pedro Soto Las Vegas last month {July 25th}, Mike
    agreed to face another 'young Tiger' in Mike Rossman, in a bout set for September 5th
    in Las Vegas.

    Mike Quarry, who at times wanted to quit boxing, has been encouraged to march on by
    his Father - Jack Quarry.

    Jack Quarry >
    "I will not allow any of my sons to quit. There is no quit in the Quarry family. My boys are
    fighters."

    "Jerry's career is winding down, but Mike can still be a World Champion. He just needs to
    catch a break or two, then he'll get that Title."

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    ~ The Skinny ~

    Mike is now ranked as the #8 WBA Light-Heavyweight.

    Mike Quarry was supposed to battle New Jersey Middleweight - Mike Rossman on
    Friday Night ~ September 5th, and in Las Vegas in a Televised bout thru Madison Square
    Garden.

    But, 7-Days before the bout, Mike Rossman pulled out due to a hand-injury.

    In a quick 'fill-in', Fight Promoter/Boxing Manager - Pete Ashlock put together a decent
    match-up between his fighter - Mike Quarry, and Puerto Rican Middleweight Champion
    Tony 'Tani' Santiago.

    Tony Santiago is a tall and lanky, 'hard-hitting' fighter from Puerto Rico, where he claims
    to be the Middleweight Champion.

    Santiago has won '11-Straight' bouts with {9 KO's} over the past 16-Months. 'Tani' is a
    big 'right-hand' swinger, and can take you out with one-punch.
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    ~ Quarry Rallies To Win Split-Decision Over Santiago ~

    ~ Quarry Floored, Comes Back To Win 10-Round Scrap ~

    World-ranked Mike Quarry and 'little-known' Tony 'Tani' Santiago engaged in an 'action-packed'
    10-Round bout last night in front of a sparse crowd of {1685} at the Sports Arena, where Quarry
    rallied late to score a Split-Decision over a 'surprisingly' tough opponent.

    After a 'listless' 1st-Round > Santiago exploded in Round 2, and tore into Quarry with a barrage
    of right-hands, eventually flooring the 'favored' Quarry with a double right-hand to the jaw at the
    {1:45 Mark}.

    Quarry was up quickly at the '2-Count', but was now cautious of the lanky Puerto Rican's power.

    A now confident Santiago charged forward in Rounds 3 and 4, and swung with heavy-hands as
    Quarry stayed on the perimeter and relied on 'quick-footwork' to stay out of harm's way, while
    he waited for an opening to counter.

    Quarry started to make his comeback-charge in Round 5, as he 'rattled' Santiago with left-hooks
    and right-hand leads to the head.

    Quarry continued with his successful rally in Rounds 6 and 7, as he beat Santiago to the punch
    while at Center-Ring, while primarily working over the thin-body of the Puerto Rican.

    Both fighters laid back in Round 8, as both looked to catch their '2nd-Wind'. But Quarry came on
    with a 'quick-attack' over the last 30-Seconds which caught Santiago off guard, and had him
    backing away fast.

    Over the last 2-Rounds, both fighters exchanged at Center-Ring, and each got in their 'licks' as
    both were 'jarred' from punches to the jaw and head. But Quarry was the better in-fighter, as he
    landed with more volume.

    Scorecards
    * Referee - Al Aldrich ........ 99-93 > Mike Quarry
    * Judge - Mick Andrews .... 96-95 > Tony Santiago
    * Judge - Bob Burns ......... 98-95 > Mike Quarry

    Fight Purses
    * Mike Quarry ................. $3475 = {27.5% of the Gate Receipts}
    * Tony Santiago .............. $1400 + {Travel and Hotel Expenses}

    Mike Quarry >
    "Boy oh boy. Where do they find these guys. This guy {Tony Santiago} was one hard-puncher,
    especially with the right-hand. In Round 2, all of a sudden I'm looking up at the Roof from the
    canvas floor. He hit me hard and fast."

    "He made me work, but I was the better-puncher down the stretch. I won the last 6-Rounds,
    as I stayed busy, and he was only 'one-punching' me."

    Mike Quarry vs. Mike Rossman

    The 'Beginning of the Trilogy'.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    These 'two' fighters truly despised each other.

    Mike Quarry was the original 'Schoolboy' Light-Heavyweight. But now, Mike was the experienced Professional
    with a World Title Challenge under his belt, despite the brutal loss by {L TKO 4} back in June 1972.

    Mike Rossman, was the 'new' Schoolboy, and competing in the Middleweight Division. It was Rossman who was
    now the 'highly-touted' future Star.

    now the 'highly-touted' future Star.

    'Rock-N-Roll' Mike Quarry ......... vs. ..........'The Jewish Bomber' Mike Rossman

    ~ The Set Up ~

    Both Mike Quarry and Mike Rossman had been fighting in the 1975 Madison Square Garden
    'TVS' sponsored Friday Night television bouts.

    Mike Quarry, at the time was ranked as the #12 Ring Magazine - Light-Heavyweight.

    Mike Rossman, at the time was ranked as the #9 Ring Magazine - Middleweight.

    Both were on a collision course for a Televised bout.

    ~ The Twist ~

    Mike Rossman had been 'unbeaten' at 20-0-1 in May 1975, and was ranked as the #5 Ring
    Magazine - Middleweight.

    In a 'TVS' bout on May 19th, Rossman faced 'swift' Mike Nixon in a 10-Round in Binghamton, New York.

    Well, Rossman got 'out-smarted' and lost a 10-Round Split-Decision.

    ~ The Kicker ~

    Mike Nixon was Mike Quarry's 'brother in-law', and Nixon was originally from Binghamton, New York.

    After the 'loss', the 'Rossman Camp' cried hometown decision, and protested the scoring with
    the NYSAC. But to no avail, as the Decision was upheld.

    ~ Aftermath ~

    Both Mike Nixon and his in-laws {The Quarry Family}, called 'The Rossman Camp' a bunch of cry-baby's
    and New Jersey 'losers' with all there whining, and complaining.

    ~ The Rematch ~

    A 'rematch' was set up for August 1st, and in Las Vegas at 'The Tropicana Hotel & Casino', and with the
    bout again televised on 'TVS'.

    This time Mike Rossman was a little more aggressive and sharper, as he had the edge in '2' of the first
    3-Rounds.

    But in Round 4, Mike Nixon started to make his charge, and fought well in Rounds 4 and 5. But Rossman
    started to land with 'heavy' left-jabs in Round 6, and had Nixon at the end of his punches.

    Then it happened. In Round 7, Mike Nixon became more aggressive, as he was moving forward while
    swinging with wide-punches.

    Then at the {0:44 Mark}, Nixon came in swinging and missed with a 'double' left-jab. Then Rossman
    quickly countered with a 'vicious' sweeping over-hand right, that landed 'flush' on Mike Nixon's head.

    Mike Nixon went down 'face-first' where he was counted out at the {0:56 Mark}. Nixon was laid out on the
    canvas for nearly 4-Minutes, as Mike Rossman won by a {KO 7}.

    ~ After Bout Comments ~

    An 'ecstatic' Mike Rossman said that > it was the 'best punch' that he has ever landed. And that he was
    looking forward to taking on a Top 10 opponent.

    Carmine Graziano {Mike Rossman's co-Manager} stated they wanted Mike Quarry next, if Quarry could
    get down to 168 or 169 lbs.

    ~ Quarry's Experience, Carries Him To Win ~

    ~ Quarry Defeats Rossman In Great Bout ~

    ~ Rossman No Match For Quarry ~

    ~ Quarry Wins Decision ~

    7-Year veteran Mike Quarry was too much for 'highly-touted' Mike Rossman down the
    stretch, as Quarry won a 'convincing' 10-Round Unanimous Decision.

    The early going of the bout was both 'brisk and exciting' as the 20 year-old Rossman
    was effective with right-hand crosses that 'jarred' Quarry when they landed on his
    jaw.

    From the outside, 'The Jewish Bomber' had the edge, and carried the fight thru the
    first 3-Rounds.

    Quarry was able to edge-out Rossman in Round 4, as he landed with 'fast' left-jabs
    and quick right-hand leads from 'mid-range', and then defended well.

    Rossman had a good 5th-Round, as he caught Quarry with a few right-hand crosses
    that stopped the Orlando-based fighter in his tracks, bringing 'loud' cheers from the
    Rossman supporters at Madison Square Garden.

    But starting in Round 6, the 24 1/2 year-old Quarry moved inside, and smothered
    Rossman's long-reach by working in close quarters, and took away the play.

    By the end of Round 7, Quarry had pulled 'Even' on the Scorecards, as his in-fighting
    was most effective with body-punches to Rossman's mid-section.

    In Rounds 8 and 9, the bout turned into a 'mini slugfest', as Quarry was landing with
    'snappy' left-hooks, and Rossman countered with 'jarring' right-crosses. But after each
    exchange, Quarry came back with another 'left-right' combination to take a slight command.

    In a 'fun-action' Final Round, Quarry and Rossman went at it by firing away at Center-Ring.
    The action was 'even' for the first-half of the session, but Quarry moved back inside over
    the second-half of the Round, where he was the better in-fighter by landing with more
    volume.

    Scorecards
    * Referee - Arthur Mercante ........ 6-3 > Mike Quarry
    * Judge - Nick Gamboli ............... 5-4 > Mike Quarry
    * Judge - Sam Irom .................... 7-2 > Mike Quarry

    ~ Special Full-Contact Karate Bout ~

    ~ Boxers Win Over Karate Experts ~

    ~ Mike Quarry Gets Tossed Out Of Ring, Wins By DQ ~

    In a bizarre Light-Heavyweight match, Mike Quarry was awarded a {W Disq. 1} over 'Karate Master' Yong Lee.

    The bout got off to a 'rousing start', as Quarry {179 lbs.} came out to Center-Ring and fired away with
    repeated left-jabs into the face of the 'Karate Specialist'.

    Then at the {1:10 Mark}, Quarry landed a 'crisp' right-hand lead to the chin of Yong Lee {182 lbs.}, that
    drove the Korean backwards and into the side-Ropes.

    Mike Quarry then moved in, and pinned Yong Lee on the Ropes, and 'flailed away' with hard-hooks to both
    the head-and-body of the Korean.

    After taking numerous blows for {40-Seconds}, an 'infuriated' Yong Lee then grabbed Quarry by the 'hair',
    and bulled at him with his head.

    Yong Lee then 'head-butted' Quarry, and kicked him in the left-hip area with several 'roundhouse' right-leg
    whips.

    As Quarry tried to break Yong Lee's grip on his hair, the Korean grabbed Quarry around the 'upper-chest'
    with both arms, and 'back-flung' him with a Karate-move, and sent Quarry through the Ropes, and onto the
    Judges table at Ringside.

    As Quarry lay on his side, Yong Lee then took off his 'Protective Foot-Pads',and jumped over the Ropes, to
    continue to attack Mike Quarry.

    As all 'Hell' was breaking loose, several of the Officials grabbed at Yong Lee, and pulled him off of Mike Quarry.

    Referee - Tadashi Yamasita immediately 'Disqualified' the Korean, and awarded the bout to Mike Quarry.

    The time was reported at the {2:20 Mark} of Round 1.

    Boxing Illustrated {August 1975}

    ~ Mike Quarry Vows To Be The 'Second' Bill Conn ~

    This 'Magazine Article' was put together just before Mike Quarry defeated {W Dec 10} the 'highly-touted'
    New Jersey Middleweight - Mike Rossman on September 30, 1975 in Madison Square Garden.

    Mike Quarry >
    "Well of course my idol is Billy Conn. He was an 'underdog' as well. I want to be like Billy, and win the
    World Light-Heavyweight Championship."

    "I know everybody says that I can't punch worth a lick. But did you know, that Bill Conn only had
    '15-Knockouts' in his '65' wins. They said the same thing about Billy, that he hit like a Lightweight.
    But they forgot about his toughness in the Ring, and his desire to win."

    "After I beat Mike Rossman, I will be in position to 'ask' for a Light-Heavyweight Championship. It
    doesn't matter who, either WBC Champion - John Conteh, or WBA Champion - Victor Galindez."

    "I have the style to give either of them a real difficult time in the Ring, because I can hit quickly,
    and I can take a punch. I believe that I can 'out-box' either of them, and take a 15-Round Decision
    with 'room-to-spare'. Just watch me if I get a Title bout."
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    As of October 1st >

    Mike Quarry {Age; 24 years, 6 months} had compiled an impressive record of 52-7-3 with {13 KO's}.

    Mike was now the #8 WBA-ranked Light-Heavyweight.

    ~ October 1975~

    World Championship Effort >

    Mike Quarry's {Fight Promoter and Manager} Pete Ashlock desperately tried to get
    either WBC Champion - John Conteh or WBA Champion - Victor Galindez to defend
    their Titles against Mike for late-1975.

    But, John Conteh 'busted up' his right-hand against Willie Taylor on August 16th
    in a 'non-title' scrap, putting the Englishman on the shelf for a 'long time', and at
    least for 6-Months.

    And WBA Champion - Victor Galindez was defending his Title for 'big bucks' in
    South Africa on September 13th, and against Pierre Fourie for a 2nd-time.

    Victor Galindez stated, that after defending against Pierre Fourie, he was taking a
    6-Month rest, and would not return until March 1976.

    But >

    Mike Quarry had developed some excessive 'scar-tissue' over his left-eye, and the
    area would get opened up in nearly every bout that Mike had since early-1973.

    For repair, Mike decided to have plastic-surgery on the area, which would put him
    'on-the-shelf' for the rest of 1975 and into early-1976.

    Mike Quarry >
    "Since both World Champions are resting until next-year, I might as well take the
    time to get my left eye-brow repaired. I'm leaving Orlando, Florida and heading
    back to California for some 'rest-and-relaxation'."

    Pete Ashlock {Fight Promoter/Manager} >
    "I would have preferred for Mike to stay here in Orlando. I had a couple of 'easy-bouts'
    lined up for him at the end-of-the-year, where he could have made some 'nice change'.

    "And the 'Rossman Camp' has been clamoring for a rematch, and they are willing to
    do anything {financially} to get it done within 3-Months. I can get Mike 'double' the
    money from last time."

    been KO'ed,

    I had accumulated a lot of information on Mike Quarry, for an article that was supposed
    to be published by Boxing Illustrated.

    But, the Heads-in-Charge did not think that there would be much interest in Mike Quarry,
    and they decided to hold off on it.

    They loved all the information and statistics, but felt that Mike Quarry was 'a forgotten
    fighter' that nobody cared much about.
