Default Cotto-Martinez being thrown around as a possibility

Local newspapers are mentioning Sergio "Maravilla" Martinez as a possible next opponent for Miguel Cotto. As much as I root for Cotto in every fight, I'd be pretty nervous about this one. I don't know at what weight the fight would be, now that catchweights are all the rage... but regardless, Sergio is the naturally bigger fighter. Cotto would be giving away significant height and reach advantages. And after seeing Martinez's two-round demolition of Paul Williams, I'm not sure there's a long line of boxers waiting to get in the ring with Martinez.

Nevertheless, I'm an admirer of both fighters. The article went on to say how both Cotto and Martinez are two of the few remaining fighters that take fights solely on the merit of being good for boxing, without too much fanfare about who gets what percentage, or any of that other shet. And I agree. A fight between Martinez and Cotto would be a throwback to the glory days of boxing, when fighters fought just to be the best, not to be the best paid. And no useless trash-talking or posturing, either. Just mutual respect, and leaving it all out there in the ring. So let's see what happens. Other names being considered for Cotto are: Berto, Mosley, and (ugh!) Margarito. Frankly, any fight with Cotto involved is automatically a good fight. Love him or hate him, the one thing I think everyone agrees on is that Cotto comes to fight. And fans are seldom left wanting. One wishes you could say that about other marquee fighters out there today.

Sounds interesting, I wouldn't completely rule out a Cotto victory on this match.

Well Martinez did say he could make 154 or 155 for Pacquiao and Mayweather, hell why not make it for Cotto? They're both free at this moment. And it would be a very interesting fight. I would slightly favor Martinez in this one, but it's not a gimme.

Not going to happen. I guarantee Cott's next fight will be against Margarito either Cinco de Mayo weekend in Vegas or NYC for Cotto's usually PR weekend fight. That has been Arum's trick for 5 years now and I don't see it changing.

I'd put Cotto back in my top 10 p4p list if he beats Martinez convincingly.

I will. Martinez is going to fuck him up in a big way.

Um. Bad idea. Love Cotto but I don't think he has a snowballs chance in hell against Bigger, faster, peaking Martinez. Tale of two different directions for these two at this point in career I believe.

Cotto needs a couple of confidence boosting fights before you put him in with someone like Marg and Martinez, forget about Pac Man.

Would much rather see Cotto vs. Angulo...

Sergio needs to focus on his P4P status now IMO.
He's got a grip of the top spots and he can def. get it on with PBF, Pac and who knows maybe even Bute.

Neither guy has more credible opponent than the other, I think Cotto does better against Martinez than most suspect, I thought Cotto would beat Paul Williams, and I think he could do fairly well against Martinez as well, I definitely would pick Cotto if he hadn't been pummeled so bad by Margarito and Pacquiao, but still I wouldn't go against him more than 60-40 in Sergio's favor. I think he is way better technically, he goes to the body so well, and Martinez doesn't have the type of tenacity Pacquiao does, he doesnt' throw those amazing combinations with power in every punch. Obviously he can knock a guy would with one punch, but I think they have to be quite wide open which Cotto rarely is, despite the fact he isn't the best defensive fighter.

Yeah no desire to see this, cotto isn't the same fighter he once was, he's been beaten badly twice and now the shoulder surgery. sergio might chronologically be older but I think cotto has actually the older body... I can't see a way cotto would win this.

Martinez dominates Cotto now as would Williams for that matter. Great fight for Sergio, he deserves an "easier" fight after having a tough year. Cotto is just the kind of fight Sergio should be seeking. This is a better fight for his legacy than Lee would be and serves the same purpose. Plus Mayweather is out for the foreseeable future and Pacquiao doesn't want to go up in weight for a Martinez fight.

i'm a big cotto fan but feel its passed him now at this stage of his career, i'd go as far as to say he should retire...he's been a great warrior had some super fights but this would be a step in the wrong direction.....even tho sergio is older hes less battle worn.......cotto is damged goods after the margarito and pacman fights

Cotto has been there, done that though. He catapulted himself as one of the best and most FEARED p4p fighter and stayed there very long. He's got excellent resume already.
