Local newspapers are mentioning Sergio "Maravilla" Martinez as a possible next opponent for Miguel Cotto. As much as I root for Cotto in every fight, I'd be pretty nervous about this one. I don't know at what weight the fight would be, now that catchweights are all the rage... but regardless, Sergio is the naturally bigger fighter. Cotto would be giving away significant height and reach advantages. And after seeing Martinez's two-round demolition of Paul Williams, I'm not sure there's a long line of boxers waiting to get in the ring with Martinez.
Nevertheless, I'm an admirer of both fighters. The article went on to say how both Cotto and Martinez are two of the few remaining fighters that take fights solely on the merit of being good for boxing, without too much fanfare about who gets what percentage, or any of that other shet. And I agree. A fight between Martinez and Cotto would be a throwback to the glory days of boxing, when fighters fought just to be the best, not to be the best paid. And no useless trash-talking or posturing, either. Just mutual respect, and leaving it all out there in the ring. So let's see what happens. Other names being considered for Cotto are: Berto, Mosley, and (ugh!) Margarito. Frankly, any fight with Cotto involved is automatically a good fight. Love him or hate him, the one thing I think everyone agrees on is that Cotto comes to fight. And fans are seldom left wanting. One wishes you could say that about other marquee fighters out there today.
