If God wanted us to be vegetarians, why are animals made of meat ?
Brutal and heart breaking.
The specialist neurologist that treated Michael Watson said the hard fight against McCallum may have left permanent bruising on Watsons brain.
The injury to Watson made him more reckless and aggressive in the fight and added a fearless streak to him.
During Watson rehab, Ali visited him and said “boy, you nearly pretty as me” which brought a smile on the face of Watson for the first time he had been there.
There were a number of benefits organised for the boxer, some by Mendy and Colin McMillan, one raised £86,000 to modify Watson’s house.
BBBC contested the case that Watson brought against them vigorously by hiring the best lawyers, arguing it would have happened anyway and even arguing that Watson should not be entitled to legal aid. Watson won that argument by saying he was incapable of earning a living.
8 years after the fight the judge ruled that BBBC owed a duty of care but it would be a further 2 years before he was paid £400,000 by Frank Warren on their behalf.
Do not let success go to your head and do not let failure get to your heart.
Brain injuries are a scary thing, and you almost have to hear people who want to see shit like boxing banned because of it. For ever granite chinned warrior who seemingly keeps their faculties, there will be some guy who didn't take nearly as much punishment but ends up a basket case somewhere along the road, there is just so much people don't know.
Seriously, most of the fighters in history have ended up permanently damaged .... including many/most of the all time greats.
For every Marciano or Tunney, there is a Beau Jack, Benny Peret, King Levinsky, Joe Louis, Muhammed Ali, Ken Norton, Riddick Bowe, Sugar Ray Robinson, Joe Frazier, Meldrick Taylor, Jerry Quarry, Floyd Petterson, Wilfred Benitez, Gerald McClellan, Leon Spinks, Davey Moore
And they were GREAT fighters that could box, fight and look after themselves in the ring!!!
I'm not getting on my soapbox here, because I love boxing. Give it 5 or 10 years and watch how many rugby players turn out the same!
If God wanted us to be vegetarians, why are animals made of meat ?
Definitely a tough sport, and that's exactly the reason why I always try to give boxers credit for getting in that ring. That being said, for many of the great ones, I don't view it as tragic as most. Think about it: these guys are warriors born, it's in their veins to fight.
I hate seeing fighters suffer the ill affects, but how miserable and empty would their lives have been if they hadn't fought? How many would've faced similar endings because they had this primal need to fight, but never would've received the compensation or adoration they did through boxing because they had to fight in the streets as an outlet? So, while I hate seeing a man injured like that, I know deep down that it really couldn't have been any other way for him...
That's also a great point!
Reading that its worse when the incompetence continued beyond the final bell. Mago sounds like a guy who no on wanted to drive home. Complaints of headaches and stumbling but left on side and handed a check later like some bit player. On a whole..Mago was failed that night.
Gabriel Ruelas – was waiting in the hospital- when Jimmy Garcia’s mum said let me see the hands that have killed my son. He said it took away his anger and hunger from fighting and he felt sorry for his opponent.
Barry McGuigan, who also had killed a boxer said his first fight back he backed off stopping his opponent and nearly got stopped himself and said he never allowed that to happen again.
Do not let success go to your head and do not let failure get to your heart.
Charles was never the same after Baroudi
Robinson was surly effected by the death of Doyle donating his next five purses to his mom to by a house that Doyle was fighting for. She blew it all on heroin which was rampant in boxing circles in those days and then tried to sue Robinson for years.
Judging by how Kovalev is today, I don't think the death of Shimakov gives him a second thought.
