    Povetkin stops Byrd!

    Sylvester, Larsen, Platov also win
    By Wolfgang Schiffbauer at ringside

2004 Olympic gold medalist Alexander Povetkin (14-0, 11 KOs) stopped former IBF and WBO heavyweight champion Chris Byrd (40-4-1, 21 KOs) in round eleven on Saturday at the Messehalle in Erfurt, Germany. The IBF heavyweight elimination bout ended when Byrd's corner threw in the towel with Byrd under heavy fire. Up to that point, it was a gutsy effort by Byrd who was seriously outgunned, especially when he got caught on the ropes or in a corner. Byrd finally started fading late, while Povetkin upped the pressure and looked on the verge of a knockout when Byrd's corner intervened at the 1:52 mark. Povetkin will now face the winner of the November 2 clash between Calvin Brock and Eddie Chambers for a shot at world champion Wladimir Klitschko.

An 11th round stoppage win for Alexander Povetkin as Byrds corner throws in the towel half way through the round with Byrd not firing back. Chris Byrd didn't complain at the stoppage.

There were no knockdowns in the fight and both landed a big right hook in the 10th with Byrd coming off worse.
Povetkin won most of the rounds with his pressure and while Byrd is not as nimble on his feet - his head movement and defensive skills made it hard for Povetkin to land clean.
Byrd landed some nice combos through the fight while Povetkin through more and had some success with the uppercut.

    Good win for Povetkin.

Povetkin is proving why he was the 2004 Olympic Champion, and why so many people are tipping him as the future of the heavyweight division, and Byrd is just a step on the ladder.

As for Byrd, although he may be a jaded version of the guy who picked up a title, he's still got plenty left, just not enough in the face of Povetkin.

Good win for Povetkin...even if this was a Byrd past his best fact is a past best Chris Byrd is a better boxer then half the division out there...I like Chris he had a good run but it is time to hang em up.....He proved a lot to the critics became champion in an era of Big men with skill....I hope he does not stick around and end up a punching bag..

Which is what I was waiting on...someone to give Byrd some credit...basically so that I could start blabbing.

Byrd was one of the more underappreciated & underratteed boxers of the last decade. Skill wise Byrd was unbelieveable...especially for a big man...but that in itself is a quandry...because I have always felt that Byrd was or should have been either a light heavy or a cruiser.

    Am I alone here?

I doubt I am...but I know a lot of peeps loathe Byrd from the floor to his forehead.

Anywho...I can honestly say that I am shocked that "Poe-dunk" stopped him.

Agreed, I hate it the most when a likable, articulate, and intelligent guy like Bird stays around too long.

At the time I thought he could've done much better in his last fight with Wladdy, but for some reason he thought he could stand right in front of him at the end of Wladdy's punches.

I hope he gets out while his still has his wits about him.

Can't wait to see the fight, and it's good to see promising young HWs on the way up, no matter where they're from.
