    Shocker: Nino upsets Viloria!

    Thursday, August 10 2006

    By Victor Perea at ringside

In what could be the upset of the year, unheralded Omar Nino (24-2-1, 10 KOs) upset previously unbeaten WBC light flyweight champion Brian Viloria (19-1, 12 KOs) and seized his world title via unanimous decision on Thursday night at the Orleans Hotel-Casino in Las Vegas. Nino, rated WBC #10 and hand-picked for this voluntary defense, outworked Viloria and beat him to the punch all night, as the "Hawaiian Punch" seemed surprisingly reluctant to attack. In the end, the scores read 117-112, 118-110, 117-111. The loss likely torpedoes a 108lb unification superfight between Viloria and WBA champion Koki Kemeda.

I don't know how Brian lost, but maybe I was expecting too much from the guy. Yes, he beat Ortiz in a grand fashion, had some bumpy rounds against Aguirre then went on to dominate and who's this guy Nino. He's supposed to be handpicked for a title defense. Well, that's boxing i remember Pac being a late substitute for Ledwaba and i dont how the hell he ended up fighting MAB he wasnt even a Featherweight then to contend.

I can't believe it, looking at the scores it looks like it was totally one-sided. But I never thought he would of been able to contend with Roberto Vasquez anyway.

romero is no fluke either. he did stop a young and green arce in 1 rd once though i seriously doubt he can do it again.

Bad night, man... Romero's 2 loses were by KO, I thought Viloria would have been able to catch him. Well it's back to the drawing board.

It looked to me that villoria got stung with an overhand right in the 1st round and was worried about getting countered from then on.

Brian is super talented but in the ring he always looks extremely vunerable, I'm not that surprised to be honest. Some fighters, especially champions have an aura of invincibility around them when they fight lesser opposition, Brian is definitly not one of those guys.

This is indeed a crying shame...but it had to happen sooner or later.

I thought he would be unbeaten until he fought VArce at least and I wanted to see Calderon and the Kameda matches too!!! Maybe a rematch here??
