James Butler, a light heavyweight contender, had just lost a unanimous decision to Richard Grant in New York.

'The Harlem hammer' was approached by Grant in the usual postfight hugging ritual which is a staple part of boxing.

Butler offered his hands, well right hand actually and landed his best punch of the night to render his opponent unconscious.

It might be the last punch he ever gets paid for.

In 1991, a 41-year-old Larry Holmes got into a street fight with former opponent Trevor Berbick in Florida. Berbick accused a friend of Holmes of breaking up Berbick's marriage. Holmes heard about the comments and chased Berbick down the driveway of a hotel and they exchanged punches.

The two boxers returned to the front door of the hotel and were standing in the driveway, separated by two cars, when Berbick screamed: "Everybody saw Larry Holmes punch me and kick me." Holmes ran onto a car, jumped off and flew at Berbick.

Though I wasn't there myself, one of my former colleagues was a writer at the fight between Bradley Pryce and Gavin Downs at the York Hall in Bethnal Green.

Basically, Bradley stopped Downs in 9 rounds, but after the fight, his brother was so happy, and was watching from the balcony that he jumped into the ring and broke his leg after the 12 foot leap. Seemed pretty bizarre to me, though rumour has it he was pretty wasted.
