The NJSACB had no concerns about Briggs'
physical ability to compete that night.
After losing his world title to Sultan Ibragimov Saturday night in Atlantic City, former WBO heavyweight champion Shannon Briggs stated that he had been forced to fight even though he was ill. That allegation has been disputed by New Jersey boxing authorities. According to deputy attorney general Nick Lembo, the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board specifically assigned ringside physician Dr. Michael Kelly to review all of Briggs pre-licensing medicals and to conduct both the pre and post fight medical exams.
