I've heard a lot of people say they love this event but believe the fight itself will be boring. I think that this will be fight of the year and much like the USC-Texas BCS Title game in 2006, it will exceed the hype. There are six reasons why I believe this fight will be great:
- Floyd's finally got his BIG paycheck. He got a double digit paycheck and PPV upside to fight ODLH. Floyd's always been chasing ODLH and now that he has cashed in, he doesn't have to worry about it.
- Floyd's "retirement." While it sucks, I truly believe the reason why Floyd said he was gonna retire was because he wanted to give himself an out of some sort with the ODLH fight. If Floyd loses a close but exciting fight, people will pay to see it again and he can make another huge paycheck for a rematch or he can just choose to quit. If Floyd wins then he won't retire and his marketability will improve. This allows for Floyd to fight a more competitive fight because Floyd has no intention of retiring unless he loses so with basically the whole world watching the fight, he wants it to be a great one. He's not chasing another big paycheck after this one. He's gonna wanna press the envelope, he believes in his skills, and really has nothing to lose but his 0.
- Floyd's ego. Floyd is the most egostical boxer on the planet. There's no way Floyd is gonna let ODLH bully him around. Floyd wants to believe that he can back ODLH up just like the rest of the people that always hope someone can beat him. Floyd always gets up for the big stages. The three biggest fights of his career have all been good and entertaining: Corrales was great fight for Floyd, Gatti was a great fight for Floyd, and Judah was a great fight for Floyd until the melee (which actually was pretty entertaining). In fact, every single Floyd fight outside of Baldy has been something great and fun to watch. Go down the list and every fight has been a good one. The only reason he didn't please the crowd against Baldy was because he wanted to make sure that he preserved the biggest paycheck of his life and he was extremely careful about that fight. Which in my mind is understandable.
- Oscar's ego. There's no way Oscar will allow himself to get embarrassed on probably the biggest stage of his career. If he feels that Floyd is doing damage that the crowd notices, expect Oscar to try and do something about it. Haha, try. Oscar truly believes that can knock Floyd out, he's got the Reyes gloves and he's got the small ring that he wanted, now he will try to knock Floyd out. This means for every combos that Floyd unleashes Oscar will try and match. When Floyd moves around Oscar will try and cut the ring off. It's gonna be awesome to watch.
- Oscar's stamina problems. Everyone knows that Oscar has late round stamina problems. Couple this with the fact that Oscar believes that he can knock Floyd out and you have an exciting fight. Oscar can't really ration his stamina off because then Floyd would have the advantage every round, I think that this will mean Oscar will be very active early, then taper off in the middle, and then save something for the championship rounds. Which means that Floyd will be active but cautious the first couple rounds, then Floyd will sit in the pocket in the middle of the fight, and then all bets are off for the end of the fight.
-The Ike Quartey-ODLH fight in 1999. Everytime I watch this fight, I think that this should be the type of fight that Floyd fights against ODLH. Ike used his jab and right hand leads and Oscar used his jab and left hook. Ike and Floyd are about the same height and both use jabs and right hand leads exclusively. Floyd possesses much better skills than Ike but you get my drift. This fight was IMO the most exciting of Oscar's career, Ike hits the canvas, Oscar hits the canvas, Ike technically won the fight IMO, but Oscar won the crowd. Before that fight neither fighter was really known as exciting but they're amazing boxing ability made that fight awesome. Granted Oscar's older and Floyd is P4P #1, the fact that Oscar is naturally the bigger man and Floyd's boxing ability is better than Oscar's will make this a great fight. I really think that Floyd-ODLH will be Ike-ODLH II with a different ending. Floyd UD 12.
The promotion of the fight will be bananas. Two former Olympians (Oscar Gold, Floyd Bronze). Possibly father training Oscar to beat his son. P4P #1 against PPV #1. Great of today versus great of yesterday. "Fan favorite" vs "villian". Everything you could ask but IMO I really think that the fight itself will surpass the hype and promotion and as boxing fans, we freaking need it to.
