    Default Poetry in Boxing

OK, so the first thing you're going to think looking at this thread is just two words, Muhammad Ali. And probably deservedly so. There was something a little more endearing about a man who could do his trash talking in the form of a poem, and with a fair dose of wit too.

I'm sure I'm not the only person who believes that the trash talking fighters of today get very personal, and people don't seem to have that much of a sense of humour about things any more, and I was wondering what people's thoughts were on other fighters who turned their fighting talk into a small work of art.

The only other who leaps to mind is Chris Eubank, and although I don't remember him with verses of his own, I seem to remember a good interview where he answered each question with another verse of the same poem.

And finally, wouldn't it be great if one of today's big names had the self-effacing humour to write a little verse for the press conferences?

This is the legend of Muhammad Ali,
The greatest fighter that ever will be.
He talks a great deal and brags, indeed,
Of a powerful punch and blinding speed.
    Ali fights great, he's got speed and endurance;
If you sign to fight him, increase your insurance.
    Ali's got a left, Ali's got a right;
If he hits you once, you're asleep for the night.

Thing for me is SupaHeavy that not just anyone can pull something off like Ali.
It takes a special type of person to be able to transcend the sport itself and make of it as he wished.

Many have tried and a couple have been able to do it in their own ways but to be honest Rhun (and I'm sure you feel this way to) I don't think ANYONE will ever be able to do with the sport what Ali did.

Ali was the most hated, loved person in the world.

He was witty, he was smart, he was a good guy wearing the mask of a bad guy.

Yeah, totally. Ali was a real special case who was a product of his time and did extend beyond the sport. But I do think that we could do with a few more charismatic boxers who can speak intelligently and not be totally obsessed with themselves, and feel obliged to do the usual talking about how they're gonna win a world title yadda yadda yadda.

    Here you go.

    LIFE IS IT?

DON’T DREAM DON’T EVEN TRY TO DREAM
SLEEP AND FORGET ABOUT YOUR LIFE
WAKE THEN MEANDER THROUGH ANOTHER DAY
THIS IS HOW IT IS HOW ITS GONNA STAY

SCHOOLED TO BE NOTHING THAT’S WHAT YOU BECAME
CONTROLLED BY APATHY NOT BY CHAINS
ANY AMBITION HAS LONG SINCE DECLINED
AS YOU STUMBLE ON WITH YOUR WORTHLESS LIFE

NEVER HAD ANYTHING NEVER WANTED MORE
    SO CONTENT TO DRIFT ALONG
EXCIST FROM ONE DAY TO THE NEXT
THIS IS ALL YOU KNOW ALL YOU EXPECT

    SHOULD HAVE BEEN A DREAMER
    COS DREAMS SOMETIMES COME TRUE
INSTEAD YOU SLEPT AND THERE WAS NOTHING
NO HAPPY DREAMS TO INSPIRE YOU

EACH DAY YOU WAKE AND WATCH TV
COS THERES FUCK ALL ELSE TO DO
ALL ALONE WITH YOUR CANS OF BOOZE
THIS SAD EXCISTENCE IS WHAT YOU CHOOSE

GETTING FAT STUCK IN YOUR CHAIR
WHAT IS IT THAT’S MADE YOU END UP THIS WAY
STARING AT TV AND NOTHING ELSE
AS THE LIGHTS SWITCH OFF INSIDE YOUR HEAD

    THEN YOU DIED ALL ALONE
A FILTHY CORPSE IN A FILTHY HOME
    YOUR BLOATED BODY ROTS AWAY
INFESTED WITH STENCH AND YEARS OF DECAY

    SHOULD HAVE BEEN A DREAMER
    COS DREAMS SOMETIMES COME TRUE
INSTEAD YOU SLEPT AND THERE WAS NOTHING
NO HAPPY DREAMS TO INSPIRE YOU

    BOXER /WARRIOR

    An ultimate test of timing

    The final frontier

    Perfection under stress

    Cross every anxious bridge

    Cover every weakness

    MAgnify every strength

    Claritry of thought under a
    battering of milliseconds

    Taste your own blood
    swallow your own anger

    Come out cool,calculating

    Give all , take all

Well I can't say it was anything close to poetry but Lennox Lewis used to put things in a whole new light at times...didn't know if you wanted to hate him because he sounded like the most arrogant S.O.B in the world or If you had to think...Not only is he a bad ass HW but has the vocabulary of an Oxford grad .....

Come on Daxx....as a writer yourself, surely you'd prefer to interview someone who is eloquent and can express themselves in a way which makes for good copy rather than some fighters who answer questions with one word answers.

As for the poems guys, thanks both for sharing them, impressed on all counts. So impressed I'll squeeze out a cc to you both.
