Burning movies to dvd disk

Never needed to do this as I just stream movies, my mum and her friends have a weekly movie night so wanna burn off all the new Oscar nominated movies so they can start next week.

Nice and simple so they can just play them through your average DVD player (uk).

Any advice on best software etc to burn them from?

I tend to use nero if I need to do a DVD mate. All my files are avi, mp4, Nero imports them all and makes a standard DVD. You can fuck about with chapters and the like if you want but I tend to just make a DVD that plays straight up without all that bollocks.

There is a free package on windows, I edit my porn on movie maker and cut out the dialogue and story and record it on DVD maker.

What the hell are dvd-r used for?
I accidentally bought some that dont work in any of my recorders but accidentally opened them, so cant change them for dvd +r.

Im a bit out of touch with home PC's and shit but I assumed you could use both these days on any relatively new burner. + and - are different formats mate, it would appear your burner can only cope with -
