    Default southpaw switching to orthadox....

im originally a southpaw, i was hittong mitts with my trainer and i asked if i could try orthadox also, I did and he suggested i switch to orthadox. I feel more comtortable as an orthadox fighter but more speedy as a southpaw, also I feel self confident about my power in my right arm seeing that im left handed. Any tips on how to develop speed as a orthadox and develop power in my right hand.?

    LOL ,

I can't help you get the power but I started switching up a bit too
years ago from orthodox to south paw.

Strange things occur, or get discovered at least for me, I
think some of it has to do with the dominant eye as well as other
    things.
I think I see better as a south paw , my jab is more talented and
my straight lefts, crosses etc seem to launch more naturally.

But so far I'm not giving up orthodox, jab is stronger if less talented
    it's reliable.
If I had but one punch and one only to do damage, I'd still call on
    my straight right for now.....

I'd say stay with both till you get a real good grove on each, so long
as it doesn't mess up your trainers ideas.

    Good luck with it.

ps the real power , comes with technique, brut strength only goes
    so far, stick with it.

Oh yea one more thing , a little bit of boxing specific weight training
is fine ,got nothing against that, but like tennis or golf etc , the
true power is in the stroke. listen to your trainer and learn how to
use your entire body correctly , it takes tons less calories when
your doing it all correctly, + lot's more fun, you'll see as you
    progress.

    Thanks Scrap,

I think it's an interesting topic particularly the stance part,
like to hear what some of the rest of you guys think about
switch stances, advantages/pitfalls ,especially as in taking
it a step further and using both stances in the same fight.
I've seen it but haven't tried it.

Theres some great fighters have turned it round, recently Hagler, Wright, Dela Hoya come to mind. Hagler tried to switcth against Mugabi and Leonard but it didnt work its hard to do it going forward because of eyesight. going forward switching gives the brain througth eyesight the wrong messages for distance, so someone throwing a mixture of straight shots and hooks at someone using that technique youll have success. Going backwards that way is a good way of confusing and stopping the other guy from fighting which is a plus. I think the fight which demonstraes this best was Barerra v Naz, Barrera didnt go looking for Naz He made Naz come to him took a half step back and met him, a very good game plan. You take your pick.

You will have better left hooks. Like Miguel Cotto does. But dont be sad about your right straights. You can learn straights all the time unlike hooks of the lead hand or the jabbing arm, because you need to combine your body weight and the natural strength of your arm to have a great left hook. And we could say southpaws have their strength at the left. And also remember that the legs are important when hooking. You need to pivot the outside foot. Thats it and you can have the perfect KO punch. A left hook from a southpaw!
