    Default When

people say when a fighter is at his peak, but when is that. Its not always when they have there best win Ive found a lot depends on the promotional setup they have in place. Some fighters have there best wins way past there best. Ill give you 4 love to here your views Hagler Whittaker Dela Hoya Holyfield

When I refer to fighter's peak, I mean the time when his skills were at their sharpest, not necessarily when he had his biggest win.

For example, of the fighters you named....

Hagler's biggest win is probably the Hearns fight, but he was already past his peak at that point, he was in his 30s. His peak was probably a few years before that.

Holyfield's biggest win was against Tyson, but he was already in his 30s and had been thru lots of wars at that time. His peak skills-wise was in the very early 90s IMO.

Whitaker's peak started in '89 with the wins over Haugen and Ramirez and extended until about '94. His win over Chavez was right near the end of his peak. His peak probably could've lasted longer, but it ended prematurely because he lost focus.

funny i always thought that peak was there best and biggest wins but the first fighter i thought of was Ali... his peak was considered 67 i think ((cant be arsed to boxrec it)) against Cleveland Williams

but his best wins where against liston 64 forman 74 and fraizer 75 all total opposit ends from his peak.

so i have accually learnt something today as i would have always said peak was around there greatest wins before reading this

Hagler's biggest wins came at the end of his career but imo, the best Hagler has ever looked was when he first won his title from Minter and around year 5 in that amazing 11 year undefeated streak. He didn't get that real big fight until he fought Hearns almost 9 years in.

Whitaker unfortunately just didn't have anyone to fight. No superstars. I mean...even though he had beat Azumah Nelson and Paez. His biggest victory was versus Chavez and it was one in which he didn't get the decision. I think the fans really longed for more after that fight. And past Chavez, his most memorable fights were versus McGirt. Now McGirt was a very good fighter, very skillful but he still didn't carry the weight that the other great fighters had on their resume. He tried to get the big fights. He tried to get DLH after Chavez, didn't get him for years, he tried to get Quartey, didn't work and he tried to get a few more. One of the BEST fighters of all time, unfortunate he couldn't get the big fights in his prime.

De La Hoya I'm not so sure of. Whitaker, Chavez, Trinidad, Leija, Carr, Mosley, Quartey ect...he got plenty of big fights in his prime.

Don't know enough about Holyfield...other then the recent ones, I've only seen the Quawi fight at cruiser and the Bowe and Tyson fights and I haven't really compared them.

How about Ray Robinson? I think most would agree that his biggest wins were at 160, but he was at his best at 147. He spent years and years at 147 but a real quick scan of his record and the only name that really jumps out at you is Kid Gavilan. Now I know Ray himself had a lot to do with not getting a lot of the big fights because of his off the wall contract demands but still...

I think its easy for people to discredit Mike Tyson now days because a lot of the younger generation don’t remember the Mike Tyson that counted. Tyson peaked very early because of circumstance he created himself. I would say that Mike peaked out vs Trevor Burbick fight. 1986 . He would continue to win impressive fights for several years thereafter but something was starting to happen.. A fighter like Mike needs to fight often and be in the gym a lot. In 1986 Mike fought roughly 13 fights that year ! Tyson was working out religiously and spending every moment training . He enjoyed the family environment around him , something that he had never had as a kid . Mike benefited from the discipline of the father figure Cuz.. And after his death in 85 a trend would start taking place.

In 87 Mike had 5 fights and in 88 he had 3 fights, and so on.. Less activity and no discipline equals loss. but you go back and take that quality Mike of 86 and put him in with anyone of the all time greats . and he could come out on top just as easy as anyone in history matched up against him in their prime . Guaranteed !

...on the contrary I think a LOT of posters here see Mike through rose colored glasses, believing he was invincible at any point in his career is ridiculous!

Hagler's biggest fight was vs Mugabi! Hearns was also a big fight though.

A couple of examples came to mind of fighters who had there biggest wins on physically their best night.

Hamed had his biggest win when he was at his best against Robinson. He picked up titles and beat good men after that but he wasnt the same.

Hatton probably had his biggest win at his physical peak. Whatever he does from here it will be pretty much impossible to top the win over Tszyu.

It pains me to say it but maybe thats a big pat on the back of Frank Warren?

I would say Tysons best win was over Holmes concidering what he did years after he fought Tyson.
