Many of the veteran posters on this forum know I’m definitely NOT a De La Hoya fan. I’ve made my position known over the couple of years I’ve been in the saddoboxing family.

I’ve made my points known that, IMHO, Oscar is basically a good (even great) fighter, who has benefited from the hype machine that is HBO Sports and the printed media. He’s got the looks, the charisma, and the sneaky sense of history and self-importance that are needed to succeed. He’s got a good record against good fighters, but has also benefited from beating up on a lot of Trinidad’s old leftovers, and some over-the-hill ex-greats. That, and knowing how and when to pick his fights (this one with PBF is a prime example), and forcing them to be under HIS conditions. And while he’s got the camera friendly face and talks smoothly in both English and Spanish, I just don’t find him real (when it comes to his boxing career).

So…. STOP THE PRESSES!!!!!!!!! It’ll probably be a big surprise to say that I’m gonna say something good about ol’ Oscar.

An article in today’s edition of The San Juan Star talks about Oscar, the boxing promoter. It’s too long to transcribe here, but the main jist of it is that Oscar the promoter will be good for the future of boxing. Oscar himself says: “Look at all the big promoters today – Don King, the Goosens – they were never fighters. I want to change boxing – it needs drastic change if it’s going to grow.”

He goes on to say that today’s promoters were never fighters, and thus cannot have the fighters’ best interest at heart. It also names quite a few good fighters that have had their careers messed up by these scumbag promoters.

The article was quite good, and as a longtime boxing fan, I have a new admiration for Oscar the promoter. I’m rooting for him to fix what’s wrong with one of my very favorite sports. If he can deliver on what he’s saying, a lot of the crap we have to put with as fans will hopefully go away with the old geezers.

So there you have it…… something good about Oscar.
That being said, I'm still rooting for Floyd.
