I think a lot of it is preference...20's will probably give you the best workout, but if they're so heavy that it's hard to punch normally/correctly then it's useless, and probably even a bad idea to use them.
The heavier bag gloves you use, the lighter your sparring/fighting gloves will feel. So if you can punch correctly with 20's, use 20's. If not, use 18's. But don't sacrifice technique for weight just so you feel like you are getting a better workout or increasing speed.
^^^ Perfectly said... From the general feel i've got, most people on here training with 18 oz gloves as the norm. You can go a little lighter I suppose to a 16 but much lower than that and your giving up a little padding that helps when your training on the heavy bag a lot. 20 is probably a little heavy if your a small guy, but if your bulky and a nice hard puncher, 20's will be fine... You can't go TOO wrong with what you go with though... I just chose 18's as that's what everyone was suggesting and they have been perfect for me.
