Default Felix Savon - amateur legend, who never turned pro

If you guys are really boxfans you will have heard of him...
I only found this, when looking for his record, sadly its french...

    http://www.geocities.com/pedrinet/savon.html

There are quite a few now known pro names in his record...

    Found these on you tube:

    Felix Savon - Shannon Briggs

    Felix Savon - Lamon Brewster

I wonder how Savon would have fared if he would have turned pro ...

    What's your opinion ?!?

IMO Savon would not have fared well in the pros at all....just because it's a totally different fight.

He would have been 25 had he come out after his first Olympic Gold during a time where Tyson, Lewis, Bowe, Rudduck, Holyfield, and Bruno were leading the way in the division. Let us not forget he was 6'6 but close to 200 pounds so had he put on more weight maybe we'd be able to judge him better but I think all the big time heavyweights of the early to mid 90's would have muscled up on him and whipped his ass.

It's a HUGE difference now'a'days between the pro and amateur fight game

No Cuban has done well in the pros (since they stopped going pro, and especially in the heavyweight division)

Interesting...I haven't thought about that,if he had turned pro at that time he would have fought
in a pretty strong HW era...
About the weight HW amateurs are always alot lighter than pros...just look how skinny Briggs looked
in the vid...so that doesn't mean much...
And no Cubans has done well as a pro ...What about Joel Casamayor or Juan Carlos Gomez,
just as an example...boxrec is down so I can't look for more names, but those two above are more
    than decent...

    Still CC for your thoughts...

Savon could have been a Lennox Lewis type of fighter or a Tyrell Biggs type of fighter....I lean towards the Biggs kind but it's only because I don't know how he'd handle the pro style

Lyle is right The offer was for Teofilo Stevenson, more a cuban boxing legend than Savon.
Imo Savon had to addept to mastering a whole different style.
The straight up boxing they do in olympic boxing is a far cry from the style you need as a pro.
That would be a lot to handle.

I don't know boys - his handspeed looks blinding and if his right hand was enough to spark David Tua, he was obviously carrying some starch in his shots...

That was a David Tua who was YOUNG and very light for Tua.....he was probably so hungry he was hallucinating out there!

Savon COULD have been great and he COULD have been exposed....like I said it's a totally different game in the pros

I think it would have been easier for Tefilo Stevenson to go pro as the amateurs back in the day were more close to the pros than they are now.

Ha, that's true - they probably had Tua in the sauna for a month before the competition.

Yep Savon was an amateur Legend.... But lets not forget that when you are older experienced and seasoned, fighting kids. of course your gonna look good... Not taking anything away from Savon's skills BUT, again when you have way more experience, Guile and craft your gonna shine over a youngster

    Yep... absolutely right...
That makes it even more impressive that Ruslan Chagaev won over Savon two times...
