Default Odlanier Solis A heavyweight to watch?

I see this guys is having his third pro fight this weekend. I'm amazed I'd never heard of him before.

He was the Olympic Gold Medalist in 2004, and has been World Amateur Champion three times. His amatuer record was 227-14, he never lost at any major international event and was 2-1 with the legendary Cuban Felix Savon, an Olympic Gold Medal winner on 3 occaisions.

In amateur fights in 2001 he beat Sultan Ibragimov and knocked out David Haye.

He's Cuban and was born in 1980 and has just started his career since defecting.

He certainly seems like one to watch, maybe the heavyweight division just got interesting..............

Oh forgot to mention, his first two pro wins have both been by first round knockout. I will be following this kid with interest.

His first pro fight was against a guy who was 32-7 and his second fight the guy was 10-1.

I've never seen him fight but he's surely got the most impressive credentials of any rookie heavyweight out there.

I'm amazed he's not had more press coverage. Maybe the US don't like him becuase he's Cuban

    Anyone seen him fight?

Well... the first few fights never mean much...But it could be that this guy might indeed be the
next big thing...in two years or something like that...

Don't know how to insert flash so here is the link to his first fight:

The Cubans have such a great culture of amateur boxing they're champs are natural world beaters. Kazakhstan will be the next world power in boxing - already a lot of amateurs friom the former Soviet countries are starting to dominate the pro ranks.

The Cubans haven't really done much in the pros....they are so good in the amateurs because they are like 30 years old and fighting KIDS that are 15-18 years old.

I'd love it if Solis was a good heavyweight can't have enough of them

Where is Povetkin from? I know he won the Super Heavyweight gold at the 2004 Olympics and seems to be doing well.

I've never heard of him that I can recall.

It takes a few mentions before someone sticks.

Personally I'd like to see Solis coming along at a fair pace, and the records of those fighters he has beat were good fighters, and to criticise him for his weight seems a bit harsh, as the 250 mark where he's been is not to bad for a 6'2" tall fighter whos pretty muscular and built. If it's a beer gut, then that's a different story.

Buildwise he definitely looks more Sam Peter than Evander Holyfield.

Still I don't care if he is a bit podgy as long as he can fight.

He looks more 6 1/2, but he does look fat. Regardless he is fast, and seems to carry a lot of power. If you watch the olympics fight he just toying with the silver medalist ala LHW JOnes Jr.

    Heres a pro fight
