Why is something like that considered so scary even to the locals who believe in them?

Are they meant to have some strange ability which would make one extremely small, slow, awkwardly moving creature able to harm a group of what - at least 3 guys?

I don't know it is a bit spooky, you never know how they can defend themselves. Not to be cruel but it would be nice to capture one and finally prove any of these creatures really exist.
