I benched last night for the first time in about 5 years. My max in high school was 285 but now my max is only 230. I'm 230 pounds and 5'11".

Not to get off topic but how long would it normally take to get back to my old max of 285? Any rough estimates? We talking months or years?

just so you know most think that this is a big part of how good of a fighter you are.

this has virtually nothing to do with boxing or any type of fighting.

that's interesting, that reminds me of something... A Mexican friend of mine told me they used to not allow boxers to lift weighs because it was believed to slow them down, is there any truth to this?

i believe that it is, if not done correctly.

for me i would hire someone to teach me how to do it properly without messing up (as i told you i dont do anything, until i know everything about it)

just a question to understand how guys like you think - why would you think it would help you

also remember that strength and power are 2 very different things are most of the time arent related

There are more important things than the bench press.

It plays some part in punching power IMO but it's not everything, coz if that's the case then most bench pressing champs should be boxing champs also.

Doing weight training will help as long as your punching technique is good, doing weight training will give you a little extra power in which could make a diference in a fight. But most power comes from technique, if you lack it even if you can bench press 130kg you will not be able to punch hard.
