Most people just don't get it. It is more about the money than picking an opponent. In Floyd's case obviously having a legacy is also a major factor. The main reason he "retired" because he's scared of tarnishing his legacy. Otherwise why wouldn't he be making more money? You have to also factor in that the fight's are setup by the promoters and is all business. So creating the image of the boxer is the job of the promoter. Trainers and Promoters keep the fighters thinking more about the business and less about pride.
IMHO Pacquaio has a harder time beating Hatton than Mayweather if they fight at a catch weight 145lbs. It's a toughter fight for Pacquaio at 147lbs but still easier than Hatton. Mayweather waited for Hatton to run out of gas like he does with most of his fights. That won't work with Pacquaio because he won't run out of gas. Mayweather wants the fight that can earn him the most $$$. He'll duck a fight he thinks he can't win, because it will hurt his legacy. That is why he is on the sidelines.
