Former world champion Jose “Chegui” Torres passed away at the age of 72 this morning in Ponce, Puerto Rico. An Olympic silver medalist in 1956, Torres (41-3-1, 29 KOs) knocked out Willie Pastrano in March 1965 to take the WBC and WBA light heavyweight world championship, which he defended three times. After retiring in 1969, he served as television commentator, journalist, author, and became chairman of the NY State Boxing Commission as well as President of the WBO.
