Matchroom Sport sign up famous son of super-middleweight champ

Amateur boxer Chris Eubank Jr will have his final fight at the unpaid level tonight in Brighton before signing up with one of the biggest promoters in the UK. The 21 year-old son of former world champion Chris ‘Simply the Best’ Eubank has had a promising amateur career and will now embark on a run in the pro ranks.

The youngster will follow his father in turning professional at the middleweight limit and is tipped to be a future star of the ring. Eubank Jnr is pencilled in to make his debut with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Sport in September, with the promoter hopeful that he can one day emulate his famous father and capture a version of the world title.

"Young Chris is a chip off the old block,” Hearn told thesun.co.uk.

"He has his dad's confidence and, dare I say it, the ability to become a world champion."

"He even jumps over the ropes for his ring entrance."

"We want to get Chris as much experience as soon as possible.

"And he'll be fighting often once he officially makes us his promoter."

Chris Jr has spent most of his boxing career in the United States, building up an impressive amateur record and winning the Western States Golden Gloves Championship. Eddie Hearn is confident that the young Eubank has what it takes to cope with the rigors of the professional fight game in the UK.

"If Chris Jr did not have the talent then we wouldn't be in the slightest bit interested in signing him. But everyone around believes he can go to the very top like his father.

"He will be starting off as a middleweight but will almost certainly develop into a super-middle because of his natural size.

"My dad Barry took Chris Snr to the very top and they enjoyed a terrific 11 years together.

"I'm looking forward to the same kind of relationship with a young fighter who has the same arrogant strut as his dad,” added Hearn.
