Default True Detective - Woody Harrelson/Matthew McConaughey

Who is watching this? Sky TV (Britain) have only just shown the first episode. Thank fuck for the internet as I was able to race through the next 5 to catch up with HBO (USA).

This is utterly brilliant. It's more like a book/film than a TV series as it's only eight episodes.

As I'm a cynical, pessimistic atheist, Matthew McConaughey's character, Rust, is the greatest person I've ever seen in a drama. Even though what he says is nothing new, it's worth watching for his delivery alone.

I watch it and am really into it. It is an excellent show and gets better when you watch each episode. I missed this past Sunday but I will watch it on demand. The show has a unique perspective and I actually think when I watch it while most TV shows actually kill my brain cells. I think we will find out Matthews character is a homosexual as most atheists seem to enjoy rump ranging.

Considering we see him doing sex with a woman and know he was married with a child, I think it's safe to rule out that he's gay.

The shootout with Reggie Ledoux was genius.

Me too. I've pretty much given up on Breaking bad for the time being and Im up to date with the walking dead, waiting for new episodes sucks balls. I need something else and I like Harrelson and McConaughey. At what point did McConaughey transform from someone who simply took his shirt off a bit to a fucking good actor?

Lincoln lawyer is on proper tele this weekend I think.

"Proper tele" At what point will we stop calling it that?
I even call it "real tele" sometimes.

Yeah it's one of the best things I've ever seen on TV, done way more like a serious film as far as the time line, plot, dialogue, everything. Don't have cable so I just raced through them all online as well, I thought the last episode was a bit worse than all the others, seemed to have the first bits of filler so far but that's just me.

The Yellow king is apparently to be loosely based on these short stories. Haven't read them and not sure I want to until the show wraps up but they sound very cool.

Sucks that the first season is almost over, but that should mean a lot of substance to the last couple episodes. Any idea what they plan to do for the next season, it's apparently going to be an anthology series Would be really weird if the characters change or something.

I was horrified when I saw there was a second season. But it will be a completely different story with different characters. What I love about this, well it's not ended yet, is the fact it's all wrapped up in eight episodes. It's like an eight hour film.

What do you mean by filler in the last episode?

Hmm, the same cast though? Or no...
Guess I thought some of the drama between Marty and his wife was a bit drawn out or pointless, but I watched it right after the fifth episode which was so intense. The bits about Cole actually investigating the schools were great, I hope they find this yellow king tonight

My sister told me about this. I had a six hour flight a couple of weeks ago and watched five shows there, found subtitles on the net and watched them on the way back again with subtitles so I could understand everythong Mcwhatshisname was saying. It is absolutely spectacular.

I've watched Dallas Buyers Club this weekend and Mcwhatshisname is some actor.

I was going to start a thread about this show after the last episode next week if the last show wasn't a let down. They do seem to have left themselves a lot of ground to cover in one hour.

    Spicoli are you watching this?

Hart: Today, that scene. That is the most fucked up thing I ever caught. Ask you something? You’re Christian, yeah?
    Cohle: No.

Hart: Well then what do you got that cross for in your apartment?
Cohle: That’s a form of meditation.
    Hart: How’s that?
Cohle: I contemplate the moment in the garden, the idea of allowing your own crucifixion.

Hart: But you’re not a Christian, so what do you believe?
Cohle: I believe that people shouldn’t talk about this type of shit at work.

Hart: Hold on, hold on. Three months we been together, I get nothing from you. Today, what we’re into, now. Do me a courtesy, okay? I’m not trying to convert you.
Cohle: Look, I’d consider myself a realist, alright, but in philosophical terms I’m what’s called a pessimist.
Hart: Um, okay, what’s that mean?
Cohle: It means I’m bad a parties.

Hart: Let me tell ya, you ain’t great outside of parties either.

Cohle: I think human consciousness was a tragic misstep in evolution. We became too self-aware. Nature created an aspect of Nature separate from itself. We are creatures that should not exist by natural law.
Hart: Well that sounds God-fucking awful, Rust.
Cohle: We are things that labor under the illusion of having a self, a secretion of sensory experience and feeling, programmed with total assurance that we are each somebody, when in fact everybody’s nobody.
Hart: I wouldn’t go around spouting that shit I was you. People around here don’t think that way. I don’t think that way.
Cohle: I think the honorable thing for our species to do is deny our programming; stop reproducing, walk hand in hand into extinction. One last midnight, brothers and sisters opting out of a raw deal.

Hart: So what’s the point of getting out of bed in the morning?
Cohle: I tell myself I bear witness, but the real answer is that it’s obviously my programming. And I lack the constitution for suicide.

Hart: So, what’s the point of getting out of bed in the morning?
Cohle: I tell myself I bear witness, but the real answer is that it’s obviously my programming. And I lack the constitution for suicide.
Hart: My luck, I picked today to get to know you. Three months, I don’t hear a word from you and—
    Cohle: You asked.
Hart: Yeah. And now I’m begging for you to shut the fuck up.
Cohle: I get a bad taste in my mouth out here. Aluminum. Ash. I can smell a psycho’s fear.
Hart: I got an idea. Let’s make the car a place of silent reflection from now on. Okay?
