    Default Oliver McCall - opinions??

I once came across a guy on Boxing Forum 24 who had the most unusual rating system I had ever seen. I can't remember what his reasoning was, but his all time HW rankings although seemingly ludicrous at first glance were well thought out and difficult to counter when presented. He was of a mainly modernist view so his list featured no Ali's or Louis's or anything like that. His exact list eludes me now but in his very top tier he had Oliver McCall at number 1.

I personally think Oliver McCall was a very good boxer and it could be argued that LEnnox Lewis never convincingly beat Oliver McCall.

Obviously McCall suffered from drug problems and was inconsistent but that aside, taking the very best version of McCall we can, does anybody else believe the best Oliver would be a handful for any HW in history??

I myself can't count him out but I am somewhat divided on my opinion.

I remember that dopy ass thread too, he must have copy and pasted it here also a couple years ago

Lewis convincingly beat McCall, it wasn't his responsibility to make sure he stayed off the pipe and complete rehab prior. McCall was more than a granite chin but he could be boxed and obviously distracted. I loved him catching Seldon way back and his highlight reel comeback ko of Akinwande.

I seen him box very well and I also seen him handled. Drugs is no excuse sure. In the second Lewis fight though, I don't remember seeing Lennox outbox him clearly though. Maybe I should watch again.

He had some good moments but I the same of course wouldn't include him top 10.

I was just wondering if this high appraisal was shared among others for this 2nd tier champ. So far doesn't seem so!

McCall along with James Toney are two of the few guys in this sport who I consider as throwback fighters.

HAHAHAHA. Mcall a throwback fighter?!! That is hilarious!!!! He was outboxed by Frank Bruno. Outboxed. Frank Bruno OUTBOXED him. He's a throwback to Tex Cobb, or Earnie Shavers, or Ron Lyle, or any other boxer who had a good chin and big punch. Usually when people refer to someone as a throwback, they mean skill wise and desire to fight anyone, anywhere. McCall was a journeyman with a big punch n great chin. Ray Mercer had more skills than McCall. Oliver would be lucky to crack the top 100 heavyweights ever. Just in his generation guys like Bowe,Holy, Tyson, Moorer, Foreman, Holmes, Lewis, and both Klits would be ranked ahead of him. He was limited in skill and a head case. Even Ruiz accomplished more than McCall.

McCall is numner one because he struggled to best a 50 year old Holmes?

What does that make Mike Tyson

Maybe the super, Gold, emeritus champion?

Bruno outboxed Lennox? Did u even watch the fight? He buzzed Lennox with a big shot, but I don't think u can classify that as out boxing him. Lewis was buzzed n Bruno beat him around the ring, but there wasn't a point where Bruno was working behind the jab, slipping and countering...etc. he landed a hard shot and Lennox always had chin issues.

He is good fighter has a win over Lewis but was out boxed by Douglas, Bruno and should of lost to a 45 years Holmes and got huge gift. He would give a lot of people a run for there money but if they had a chin and could box then he was kinda out of luck pretty much then.

Frank Bruno also outboxed Lennox Lewis before getting stopped, so don't sleep on Bruno like he's a bum.

I like McCall, not an amazing technical fighter but a handful for anyone with his granite chin and huge power.
