Great talent combined with great work ethic.
Having a good boxing pedigree doesn't hurt, either.

Im not sold on that one at all.
The person who gave him his closest fight in Castillo 1 (I thought Castillo won on a point actually). Floyd gave a return bout and did the job in flying form.
This is a crooked sport at times so that record of his could of been protected a touch by the sports interests .
But he had work done on his shoulder and came back to fight him Floyd weighed in at 138 Castillo at 147.
Floyd for the most part is consistently controlling in and out of the ring though.
He has done up all the people I thought had the best hope against him Mosley,JMM,Cotto, probably in order.
'What has made Floyd great?'
1. Floyd is a shrewd dude.
He is not the most educated person you are going to meet, he does put his foot in his mouth on occasion, and he does have a few strange ideas about life, but he is not stupid.
Floyd knows a good idea when he hears it and will accept advice from those he trusts (family members or Haymon as examples).
Floyd has bumped heads with some of the shrewdest in boxing and has come out ahead.
Dropping Arum, promoting himself, switching to Showtime and keeping his hand in negotiations are all signs of listening to and taking good advice. It also indicates a risk taker with a set of balls the size of beach balls!
2. Yeah, someone said boxing pedigree!
When most of us were learning to ride a bike, Floyd was setting around a gym listening, watching, absorbing, deciding what worked. He was hitting the heavy bag, the speed bag, and the pads with his uncle or some other trainer or his dad. I'm not saying he was there all the time but I think he probably knew as much about throwing a punch correctly at age 10 as we do now.
3. Floyd loves boxing!
He is a gym rat, loves training, loves performing, loves the competition, loves the attention, loves his 'fuck all y'all' persona, loves the women, and loves the money. Oh yeah, loves to win!
4. Floyd is a control freak!
5. Inside the ring!
Floyd is the best in the ring. His speed, poise, the way he uses the ring, the way he can fight off the ropes, the way he hides behind his shoulder, his punch selection, the way he draws very good fighters into punches, the way he is almost always in position, and his experience make him the best, right now. He takes a pretty good punch too, meaning he recovers very fast
These are the things that make Floyd great and wildly popular with his fan base, in my opinion.
He's as flawed as the next guy outside of boxing and not someone I could ever be friends with or hang out with, not that he'd ever want to hang with me. lol If you only knew how funny that is!
Floyd Mayweather jr is one of the most God Given talented ever & could today be regarded in the same breath as Ali, Robinson etc but he's NOT & never will be. Talent alone does not make a great fighter he needs heart , courage & yes cojones too. This is where Floyd loses out. For reasons, known only to him, Floyd regards his 0 as EVERYTHING. He's done everything he can to protect it hes ducked fighter, made ludicrous excuses not to face then & blatantly lied on many occasions. Even so If justice was done Floyd would already have 2 losses on his record Castillo 1 & Maidana 1 Floyd is his own worst enemy HE is the only one to blame for his tarnished legacy. Floyd is a VERY GOOD fighter but he'll never be an ALL TIME GREAT!!!
