ANTHONY JOSHUA will learn the identity of his new short-notice opponent later today.

Promoter Eddie Hearn has worked frantically over the weekend to try and secure a replacement for Whyte.

American Gerald Washington is the current frontrunner to win the lucrative AJ sweepstakes.

Washington, 41, was scheduled to throw down with Chisora on the undercard of the show and would be the ideal replacement.

The Yank's height and ranginess would be ideal for Joshua to prepare for his long-overdue grudge match with Deontay Wilder.

Washington is a member of Team Wilder and trains with Bronze Bomber's head coach Malik Scott.

“Learn the identity of opponent” 😆 suppose they can be more transparent with a guy not even named Gerald Washington. It’s not an spisode of the bachelor reveal ffs. Did they even respond to Ruiz?

Robert Helenius has lost to Whyte and brutally knocked out by Wilder in 1 round a couple of fights ago. He is huge but under the circumstances better than Chisora. Helenius has also been knocked out to Gerald Washington who was also being considered.

Any of the names rolling off peoples tongues would have wanted paying accordingly for stepping in. By accordingly, I mean far more than they're worth. Par for the course that Joshua, who so many people are convinced is a drug cheat (look at those muscles) gets let down by another drug cheat and finds himself taking shit because the 11th hour job isn't good enough. Is no one allowed to fail a drugs test any more? Do we have to say an 'adverse finding' as opposed to failed in case we hurt someone's feelings? Drug tests are pretty much redundant aren't they. No one fails, the result gets wrapped in several layers of bullshit until the dust settles and everyone gives up. There's no deterrent. Christ there's a thread knocking about asking to see Miller back in the ring.

Impossible to please everyone with the replacement whoever it was.
Personally I would have liked the best or highest ranked available guy. That would probably be Hrgovic. But Eddie has come up with very valid reasons as to why each opponent named could or could not fight. Hrgovic has been training for 12 weeks to fight a Southpaw.
Hey, it’s a blowout against a very big guy, so you never know.
Brock will be creaming his pants because he loves Helenius. You never know, he might pull it off.

Yeah can't fault this replacement at such late notice.

Joshua damned if he blows him out early and damned if he goes the distance.

Suggest he fakes a knockdown where he's not hurt early - maybe take a knee- then stops Helenius in the 4th. That will work

    20 Dear dear me.

Yet another failed drugs test from a guy who has been in drug trouble before, but nobody cares.

Joshua feels he is tied in to the deal, so he has to fight …. Rather than pulling the whole event a just picking a better fight in a few months time against a good fighter who would help his career. If he loses to Helenius, it’s all over for him

then they pick a guy who isn’t even fringe. Stoppage losses on his record, very mediocre. Would Ali have done this just to save the broadcaster and his promoter? Would Mike Tyson have fought a guy outside the top 20 if an opponent failed a drugs test? Joe Louis would have done, in fairness.

Joshua has put himself in a terrible position. Win, and it’s ‘so what’. It’s not a good fight for his career and he gets nothing useful out of it athletically.

So we have Tyson Fury fighting someone who has never had a boxing match before. Joshua fighting someone who shouldn’t be PPV. Usyk fighting a mandatory challenger ….. and nobody else even in the heavyweight mix now.

I thought the 1980’s were bad - but this is even worse. No wonder some fucking YouTubers and long retired Welterweights are making more money and engaging fans more than the real fighters.

Criminal. Everyone just has their beak in the trough for everything they can get for the least amount of work possible.

I do like AJ intention of getting right back in by years end regardless. More than can be said for a couple others just waiting on a mega lotto. This now puts him in an odd comparative vs Wilders quick result in sending Helenius to Valhalla .
