Sugar Ray Robinson was 40-0 when he fought Jake La Motta. He'd already beaten him once. Ray was a Welterweight. Jake was a middleweight. 14 pounds ? No problem. He fights La Motta for a second time. La Motta wins via a brutal 15 round decision. Becoming the 1st person to beat Ray Robinson

They rematch again 21 days later.

But it's gets better.

Sugar Ray fights a 10 rounder a week later to prepare him for the La Motta rematch.



Ray wins the rematch via decision. Then goes undefeated for his next eighty fights.

That's eighty fights in 8 years

Until he loses to Randolph Turpin in 1951 (And this loss was probably because this was the last fight of his European tour. A tour of seven fights in two months, fighting France's best, Germany's best etc and he beat Turpin in rematch two months later)

That's why all these fighters of today, even Mayweather need to humble themselves when they start talking about TBE. Apart from Canelo, the top fighters of today only fight every 10 months (if that) and avoid risks.

Basilio was among the first Hall of Fame inductees in 1990 and fought in four bouts that were voted the best fights of the year. Two of these were against Robinson. He fought Ray Robinson twice. The score was 1-1. Both were spilt decisions. Some say Basilio won them both. Some say Ray. Either way he went life and death with the man widely regarded as the greatest fighter ever to lace up gloves and he had the balls to stand up to the Mafia.
