The Hunky Dorys Fight Night has officially become the biggest event in Irish boxing history with the news that Ireland’s finest amateurs will also be in action at The O2, Dublin on Saturday, March 21.

Although WBA World Super Bantamweight Champion Ricardo Cordoba says he won’t be watching any video of Bernard Dunne ahead of their Hunky Dorys World Title Fight Night, the champ's backroom team are adamant that they will be doing their homework on the challenger.

The two men clash at The O2, Dublin on Saturday, March 21 and Cordoba’s promoter Richard Dobal says they have the utmost respect for Dunne.

“I’ve a lot of respect for Bernard because he’s done what very few European fighters do, he went to the U.S. to learn his trade with Freddie Roach, who’s probably the most successful trainer in the world”, said Dobal.

Irish boxing hero Bernard Dunne goes in search of the ultimate prize at The O2 in Dublin on Saturday, March 21 at the Hunky Dorys World Title Fight Night.

Dunne takes on World champion Ricardo “El Maestrito” Cordoba for the WBA Super Bantamweight title as world championship boxing returns to Ireland for the first time in 13 years.

The Dubliner turns 29 next month and he feels the timing is perfect for a shot at the WBA belt, which once adorned the waist of Barry McGuigan over two decades ago.

“This is the fight I’ve wanted since I first put on a pair of boxing gloves,” said Dunne. “It’s every boxer's dream to be a world champion and I’m no different. This is what I’ve worked my whole life for and now that the chance is here I want to grab it with both hands.” More...

Billy Walsh and Stephen Haughian will finally get it on for the Irish Welterweight title at the Craigavon Leisure Centre on February 7. Haughian has been eyeing a crack at the undefeated Corkman’s title ever since Walsh won it 12 months ago and now he’s got his wish.

“To be fighting so close to home is a dream come true and to fight for the Irish title is the icing on the cake,” said the Lurgan man. Former European super bantamweight champion Bernard Dunne has been hit with a change of opponent ahead of his headline appearance on the Hunky Dorys Fight Night at the Breaffy House Resort, Castlebar on November 15.

Dunne had been set to face Eduardo Garcia but the Mexican has been forced to pull out after suffering a bad cut in sparring for the fight. Stepping in to replace Garcia is another world rated contender in the shape of Cristian "El Terrible" Faccio. The Uruguayan is the reigning WBC Latino bantamweight champion and ranked number 11 in the world while Dunne is listed at number 24 at super bantamweight by the same organisation. More...

Henry Coyle says he will be fulfilling a lifetime’s ambition when he steps between the ropes at the Breaffy House Resort, Castlebar, Co. Mayo on the Hunky Dorys Fight Night on November 15. It will be the Mayo man’s first pro outing on home soil and it couldn’t be much closer to home for his sizable fan club from Geesala.

Bernard Dunne’s rehabilitation continued Saturday night in Dublin’s National Boxing Stadium. A near full house greeted the "Irish Rover" in his second return to the ring since the traumatic ordeal against Kiko Martinez eleven months ago. The atmosphere was jovial all night. Fans were treated with the ringside presence of Matthew Macklin, who contributed greatly to the festive mood surrounding the events.

Dunne’s entrance greatly overshadowed opponent Damian David Marchiano’s modest introduction to the Irish audience. The Argentine appeared unfazed by his lack of support however and rather than merely waiting in his corner, he prowled the ring, looking threatening.

Upon entering the arena, Dunne’s appearance was an immediate point of speculation. His entrance garb left only his arms exposed, but they seemed more muscular than in previous outings. He seemed to have grown, his chest and abdomen appearing stronger than in previous bouts and his visage not as gaunt as before.

When the fighters were brought together, Dunne, although supposedly only an inch taller, was evidently the bigger man. Marchiano, a sturdy, rugged looking fighter was notably smaller, yet seemed unperturbed by the Irish man’s imposing figure. As referee Emille Tiedt administered his final instructions, the crowd roared its support of Dunne, every voice audibly contributing to a formidable battle cry.

As the action got underway, the fight did not match the crowd’s enthusiasm. Dunne carefully placed his feet defensively and planted his jab on the forehead of Marchiano repeatedly. The first round saw little variation, Dunne occasionally following up with a cross or hook, completely dominating the opening session with his superior reach and foot movement.

One would have speculated that this was a tentative opening from Dunne had he not made it clear that this was the tactic he wished to employ. Respectful applause heralded the closure of the opening session and the crowd descended into near silence between rounds. More...

Argentina’s Damian Marchiano has been confirmed as Bernard Dunne’s next opponent when they clash at the Hunky Dorys Fight Night at the National Stadium, Dublin on July 12.

Their ten round contest will headline a seven fight card that features two Irish title bouts.

Marchiano is coming off an unsuccessful challenge in South Africa for Silence Mabuza’s IBO title and he knows a second successive defeat is not a desirable career option. "I know I must win this fight but I am confident that I can beat Dunne even in his hometown," said the 28-year-old from Buenos Aires.

"We are working on a strategy for the fight and I think it will surprise Bernard. I don’t think he has met someone as physically strong or courageous as me.
