Contender Alumnus Joey Gilbert To Promote Own Boxing Event In Reno

ByBoxing Press 01/04/2007

Joey Gilbert Promotions Brings Championship Boxing to Reno, NV when “Reno After Dark” Championship Boxing comes to the Reno Events Center

After a successful first boxing production in Lake Tahoe, Joey Gilbert Promotions will be bringing its second professional boxing event to Joey Gilbert’s hometown of Reno, NV. The “Reno After Dark”-Championship Boxing event will be held at the Reno Events Center on Saturday, May 12, with doors opening at 6 PM and the first bout starting at 7 PM.

Gilbert, a TV star from the reality show “The Contender” and WBO-NABO Middleweight Champion, will be headlining the event at 9pm against an opponent to be named shortly. This will be his third title defense, but his first bout in his hometown since his college glory days, and an important step in his quest to become world champion.

Gilbert’s second successful title defense resulted in a 12-round unanimous decision against undefeated Michi Munoz (17-1, 12 KOs) in Lake Tahoe on March 2nd.

“Ever since my college boxing days and the incredible international exposure I received on the Contender, I have waited for the right time to bring boxing back to my hometown community and make it an “Evening of Entertainment,” said Gilbert.

”Promoting and fighting in Reno is what I have worked so hard for and I am excited to showcase the local and regional talent this area has to offer as well as what downtown Reno has to offer in the form of night life and entertainment.”

As a world-ranked professional fighter, Gilbert is currently the World Boxing Organization’s (NABO) Middleweight Champion and ranked #6 by the WBO with a record of 14-1, with 10 knockouts.

Prior to his professional career, Gilbert was a collegiate fighter at the University of Nevada where he was a three-time National Champion, a four-time Regional Champion, a four-time All American, and Nevada State Golden Gloves Super Middleweight Champion.

Gilbert chose the Reno Events Center in association with the Eldorado Hotel and Casino and KING 888 Energy Drink to promote this entertainment production. “The Eldorado and the Carano family have always been supportive of my boxing and entrepreneurial endeavors,” said Gilbert.

“This is a big production not only for our team but also for our city, and I’m glad to have them in my corner when this event produces knockout results; I am also equally excited to be bringing on new sponsors like KING 888 Energy Drink, which is a perfect fit with “VIP” style, high energy boxing cards, which is what we are promoting”.

Under card bouts precede the main event, each featuring local talent and rising stars determined to scrap their way to prominence in the ring; Reno’s (by way of McDermitt) Derek Hinkey will fight again after scoring an impressive first round TKO in his pro debut at the Snow-Brawl at MontBleu Casino in Stateline, NV.

Doors open at 6pm, first bout at 7pm & the Main Event at 9pm. Tickets start at $20 for students, police, fire, & military, $35 General Admission, $100 floor & $200-$250 ringside floor. To purchase tickets call (775) 787-8597 or visit www.ticketmaster.com.

All $100, $200 & $250 include a VIP Credential, with access to pre-fight parties, a private VIP area at the fight with drink specials & live music & Joey’s after party at Eldorado’s Bubinga Lounge Featuring DJ IKON of Las Vegas’ Nine Group & Resident DJ of the Playboy Club Las Vegas. Corporate ticket packages of 10 or more $75 tickets or 15 or more $35 tickets include VIP credentials for the whole group.

Chris Billam Smith fighting for Zuffa for the first time this Saturday. I think he is being set up to face Jai Opetia later in the contract. Chris got easily beaten by Zurdo in a unification and we all kn […]

  • Where does Usyk go from here? 27/05/2026
For once, I’m totally on board with the WBC. WBC moves to shut down Usyk-Verhoeven rematch talk I personally have NO wish to see a rematch between Rico and Usyk. Call it defensiveness of our sport. Just like I thought Fury’s narrow escape against Ngannou was cringeworthy… I also feel a sense of dread that we came “this close” to having a kickboxer defeat the […]

Jai Opetaia Says Boxing Rewards Talk More Than Skill This has long been a thought of mine, but of course it’s always refreshing when an actual boxer says it. Jai is obviously considered by most to be the top dog at cruiser, a division which unfortunately lacks the big names. Surely avoided by many. It could be speculated that at some point Jai could follow t […]
