Boxing In Australia: Asiku vs. Ruiz For IBO Belt

By Bruce Dingo November 4th, 2009 All Boxing Previews

This Friday at the Leagues Club in Parramatta, NSW featherweights Jackson Asiku and Heriberto Ruiz tangle for the vacant IBO crown in what should be a thrilling contest.

Asiku, 25-3 (13), comes into this one riding a 14 fight win streak over the last five years and during that time the 31 year old native born Ugandan has held the Commonwealth, Australian, African Boxing Union and IBF Australasian titles.

The Adelaide resident has picked up notable wins over Gairy st. Clair, Jamie McKeever and Marc Callaghan during that stretch but now has to come to terms with his most experienced opponent to date.

32 year old Ruiz, 42-8-2 (24), is a textbook Mexican warrior who has fought just about everyone at bantam and super bantam over the course of his 15 year career, losing only to ex-world champions Steve Molitor and Eric Morel over his last nine contests.

The Los Mochis native will be stepping to to featherweight for the first time in his career however and that will almost certainly be a factor in this hotly anticipated clash. More...

Boxing In Canada: Molitor Narrowly Defeats Ruiz In IBF Eliminator

By Danny Wilson June 27th, 2009 All Boxing Results

Ex-IBF super bantam titlist Steve Molitor took one step closer to contending for his former belt by posting a split decision over seasoned Mexican campaigner Heriberto Ruiz last night at Casino Rama in Rama, Ontario.

Slick southpaw counter-puncher Molitor was spurred on by the 5,000 strong highly partisan audience but the experienced Los Mochis based visitor nearly pulled off the upset.

The early rounds were marked by a cautious approach by both fighters as each seemed to wait for the other man to take the lead. More...

The win earned Ruiz an IBF title eliminator in June at Casino Rama and the Los Mochis veteran will face former IBF titlist and local man Steve Molitor in June. More...

Boxing In Puerto Rico: WBO Champ Calderon Leads The Way On Big Show In Bayamon

By Alejandro Tostado August 31st, 2008 All Boxing Results

It was an epic card last night at Ruben Rodriguez Coliseum in Bayamon as there were a full four title fights, headlined by a WBO Light Flyweight championship defense by Ivan Calderon.

The 33 year old southpaw took on the man he won the WBO belt from, Mexico's Hugo Fidel Cazares, in a rematch to last year's bout in which Calderon had to climb off the floor in the eighth in order to pull out a split decision.

This time, Calderon was on his way to outboxing Cazares in a close, competitive bout until an accidental head clash produced a deep laceration on the forehead of the Puerto Rican icon and the bout was declared a technical decision in favor of Calderon at 1:58 of the seventh.

Calderon, who won twelve WBO minimumweight title fights, stays undefeated at 32-0 (6)while Cazares loses only his second bout in eight years, both to Calderon.

On the undercard, super feather Roman Martinez, 20-0-1 (12), stayed perfect with a sixth round TKO over Santos Benavides, 14-2-1 (12), to retain the WBO NABO crown.

Bantamweight Eric Morel, 39-2 (20), a former WBA Flyweight Champ, continued his comeback from a three year hiatus by winning his fourth contest on the bounce, posting a twelve round UD over veteran Heriberto Ruiz, 39-7-2 (23), who was down in the third.

Welter Euri Gonzalez, 17-0-1 (12), chinned Edwin Vasquez, 22-13-2 (8), in the second session to annex the vacant WBO Latino trophy.
