Boxing In Mexico: Nishioka Guns Down Gonzalez To Retain WBC Crown

By Alejandro Tostado May 24th, 2009 All Boxing Results

Jhonny Gonzalez's dream to return to world championship standing came to a crashing halt last night at Arena Monterrey in Monterrey, Mexico as he was stopped by reigning WBC super bantam kingpin Toshiaki Nishioka in just three rounds.

Gonzalez nearly pulled off an upset in the very first round as the hard-punching Mexico City man announced his arrival by canvassing the champion but Nishioka rose to his feet and made it through the round.

In the second, the champion began to settle in as his compact southpaw style began to reverse the disastrous start but Nishioka was still wary of Gonzalez's power.

In the third, Nishioka rammed home a perfect southpaw left behind a double jab that had Gonzalez on his back and in dire straits. More...

Boxing In Mexico: Nishioka vs. Gonzalez For WBC Title Tonight In Monterrey

By Alejandro Tostado May 23rd, 2009 All Boxing Previews

Big bill on tonight at Arena Monterrey in Monterrey, Mexico as reigning WBC super bantam champ Toshiaki Nishioka heads into the lion's den to face challenger Jhonny Gonzalez of Mexico City.

Tokyo based southpaw Nishioka, 33-4-3 (20), will be making a rare appearance outside Japan but is coming into this first title defense after having won the belt with a dramatic 12th round stoppage of Mexican veteran Genaro Garcia in January.

32 year old Nishioka has been a pro since 1994 and fought WBC bantam titlist Veeraphol Sahaprom four times between 200-2004, losing the first and fourth while forcing draws in the second and third bouts.

Nishikoa moved up to super bantam after the last Sahaprom contest and has since reeled off 10 straight victories.

In the oppositie corner, 27 year old Gonzalez, 40-6 (34), has been a pro since he was 17 and after losing his first two bouts, won the next 14, capturing the NABF bantam crown along the way. More...

In addition to the press tour, which has already hit Los Angeles, New York and London, six of Golden Boy's finest will step into the ring this week for pivotal battles on their road to world championships. More...

Boxing In America: Rocha, Gonzalez, Arceo Win At Morongo Casino

By Richard Eberline November 22nd, 2008 All Boxing Results

At the Morongo Casino and Resort in Cabazon, CA last night, super bantams Nestor Rocha and Jhonny Gonzalez looked sharp in winning meaningful victories.

Rocha, 21-1 (7), continued to rebuild following his loss to unheralded novice Jonas Hernandez last year by widely outpointing steel chinned Mexican veteran Oscar Andrade, 36-35-2 (18), after ten frames of combat.

Andrade represents Rocha's most experienced opponent to date and could represent one of the final bouts for the 26 year old Montebello based boxer before he gets a title shot.

Former WBO Bantamweight Champion Gonzalez, 40-6 (34), continued to shine following the loss of his title last year to ageless Filipino Gerry Penalosa with his fifth straight stoppage win, knocking out Colombian southpaw campaigner Reynaldo Lopez, 30-6-2 (21), at 2:17 of the fourth round.

In a hard nosed six round test of wills, San Ysidro man Luis Antonio Arceo, 20-8-2 (13), won for the first time over his last eight appearances with majority decision against previously unbeaten prospect Demetrio Soto, 5-1 (4), at welterweight.

Boxing In America: Shaun George, Jhonny Gonzalez, Jose Reyes Roll To Victory

By Richard Eberline May 17th, 2008 All Boxing Results

It was a good Friday night in The States and we start off at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas where Shaun George, 17-2-2 (8), crushed the light heavyweight dreams of former heavyweight world champion Chris Byrd, 40-5-1 (21), gunning down the one-time defensive master in the ninth of a scheduled ten rounder.

Instead of using his counterpunching strengths, 37 year old southpaw Byrd tried to force the action and appeared to no longer have the reflexes to avoid getting hit as he was nailed all night by the younger man.

George landed much of what he threw and dropped Byrd in the first but it wasn't until the ninth round that he could hurt the former Olympian. A left-right combination canvassed Byrd hard in that round and the former heavyweight was then felled by the followup barrage before the bout was finally waived off at 2:45 of the fifth.

Having now won his fourth straight bout, George will be looking to leverage this high profile success into a title shot in the near future while Byrd may just be at the end of the line after a long and proud career that saw him overcome a lot of disadvantages to achieve remarkable feats. Boxing In America: Weekend Results

By Richard Eberline April 6th, 2008 All Boxing Results

There wasn't much action in the States this weekend but there were two good cards on Friday, with ex-IBF Lightweight and WBC Super Feather Champ Jesus Chavez leading the way at the Morongo Casino in Cabazon, CA.

The 35 year old "El Matador" made his return to the ring after losing to his IBF belt by injury to Julio Diaz 14 months ago and turned back the clock with a characteristic busy performance to post a unanimous decision over Puerto Rican prospect Daniel Jimenez after ten rounds at lightweight.

Chavez improves to 43-4 (29) and will likely get a title eliminator or title opportunity in the near future while Jimenez loses for the second time in a row to fall to 17-3-1 (10). More...
