Boxing Result: Klitschko Remains Atop Heavyweights With Arreola Win

By Richard Eberline September 26th, 2009 All Boxing Results

Despite his 38 years, Vitali Klitschko remains firmly in control of the heavyweight division after battering brave but outgunned challenger Chris Arreola for ten rounds last night to retain the WBC title at Staples Center in Los Angeles.

Arreola stuck to his game plan of coming forward in the attempt to take away the towering champion's reach advantage but for a big man, Klitschko has excellent footwork, reflexes and boxing skills, nullifying almost everything the challenger could offer.

Using a pole axe-like jab, Klitschko made Arreola pay for each foot gained into enemy territory and on many occasions, the champ's very hard right hand followed in combination to great effect.

Arreola's main problem early on was he could not land anything of substance. That changed a bit in the middle rounds but Klitschko proved to be able to take Arreola's heavy artillery on the occasion when it connected and also punish the Californian afterward for his troubles. More...

Throughout history there have been scores of outstanding Mexican boxers who have held world titles in various weight classes, most notably, between 118 pounds to 135 pounds, while fighting their way to worldwide stardom.

But amazingly, the storied history of Mexican warriors has never produced any boxer of Mexican descent who has won a world championship in the heaviest of divisions. More...

The Five All Time Worst Boxing Decisions

By David Shipman May 13th, 2009 All Boxing Articles

This article is meant to be contrasted as only opinion, but there is more to it. This writer will explore the tale-of-the-tape, the circumstances and how it went down, who deserved to win, and most importantly, why.

This will only cover modern-era fights, mainly between 1980's until now, because one can simply not find enough material to sift through and cover. Now, for the moment you have been waiting for...

Number 5:
Jose Luis Castillo vs Floyd Mayweather, Jr. I, 2002. Result: Mayweather, Jr. 116-111, 115-111 and115-111. What should have happened: Mayweather picked up the first three rounds easy on all scorecards, but hurt his hand. Castillo used amazing tactics and bullied Mayweather to the ropes, he began to score at will with his left hook. He even muscled Mayweather, hit him with a barrage of good body shots and began to close the gap.

I had Mayweather losing rounds 4-7 and rounds 8 through 11. This equals out to 115-111 for Castillo. Castillo should be applauded for not giving up his title through selling his "soul" to promoters. This is arguably Mayweather's first loss. Mayweather would eventually "school" Castillo in the rematch. Although the judges had it 115-113, 116-113 and 116-113, many pundits scored the rematch 117-111 for Mayweather. More...

Boxing Perspective: Does Hatton vs. Pacquiao Parallel Pryor vs. Arguello?

By Daxx Kahn March 18th, 2009 All Boxing Articles

Just under 27 years ago, two men stepped into the ring and created the most memorable 140lb bout to ever take place when former three division champion Alexis "El Flaco Explosivo" Arguello stepped up to challenge then reigning WBA light welterweight champion Aaron "The Hawk" Pryor in his quest for a fourth division championship.

Arguello, the crowd favorite by far, had not lost in five years and was widely considered one of boxing's pound for pound greats, while Pryor was undefeated and had developed an aura of invincibility, stopping 29 of his 31 previous opponents.

The bout did not disappoint onlookers in any way, shape or form as the two men went to war, giving it all they had until finally Arguello had enough and the bout was halted in the 14th round.

Until this day, no other 140lb bout has captured the heart of boxing fans the way Arguello vs. Pryor had, nor to this date has there been another light welterweight bout which produced the same amount of electricity that circulated through the air of Miami's Orange Bowl on November 11 1982. Not even when Julio Cesar Chavez faced off in the first of two meetings with Meldrick Taylor.

Some fans had even come to believe that we might not see another bout of that proportion in that division for another 50 years, if ever! This of course has little to do with the fact that talent has been scarce at that weight because the light welterweight division has been anything but lackluster in talent over these past 25 plus years.
