Boxing fans will have to wait a little longer for the Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones Jr. rematch.
Originally, the light heavyweight fight was scheduled to take place early in the New Year. According to officials however, there is a clause in the contract that allows Jones to honour an already agreed upon fight which means that Hopkins has the option to go out and take on an interim bout.
This brings us to the announcement made on Wednesday, October 14, 2009, that Hopkins has taken on a fight against Enrique Ornelas. That bout is scheduled for Wednesday, December 2, 2009.
This interim fight is meant to prepare the aging boxer for his upcoming clash against Jones Jr.
At age 44, Hopkins has an impressive record of 49 wins and 5 losses with 32 knockouts. His opponent Ornelas has a record of 29 wins and 5 losses with 19 knockouts. Ornelas is the brother of super middleweight contender Librado Andrade, who is scheduled to fight Lucien Bute in a much anticipated rematch. More...

The question of just who is the best light heavyweight in Florida was answered last night at the Gulf Coast Arena in Biloxi, MS as Roy Jones Jr and Jeff Lacy headlined the heavily-hyped "Hook City" fight card.
In a sharp display of one-way traffic, Jones controlled the pace of the bout the entire duration, beating ex-IBF super middle titlist Jeff Lacy to the punch time after time.
Despite turning 40 in January, Jones had little difficulty with his 32 year old adversary, convincing Lacy's corner to pull their man out before the advent of the 11th round.
Former multi-weight world champion Jones improves to 54-5 (40), while Lacy falls to 27-3 (17), after losing twice over his last three appearances. More...

It's the battle for Florida bragging rights tonight at the Gulf Coast Arena in Biloxi, MS as former world champions Roy Jones Jr and Jeff Lacy tangle for the NABO light heavyweight crown.
Neither one of these combatants are anywhere near their prime but it could be interesting as Jones, 53-5 (39), seeks to keep his career alive a full six years after his last masterful performance and Lacy, 25-2 (17), looks to regain his edge that was blunted forcefully by Joe Calzaghe in 2006.
40 year old Jones is coming off a stoppage win against Omar Sheika in March while Lacy, 32, managed a majority decision over Otis Griffin in April but Jones will likely have the advantage tonight in Biloxi. More...

“Renaissance” would be the wrong term to describe what’s happening in the super middleweight division right now. That implies a “rebirth,” but never before has the division seen this depth of talent, and more importantly, a group of talent who actually show interest in fighting one another.
Remember the Roy Jones Jr./Frankie Liles/Steve Little days?
When Joe Calzaghe left the division in late 2007, he left a gaping void at the top. In retrospect, this was something of a blessing—the absence of a champion created a carrot for the line of highly-capable contenders in tow.
What’s beginning to transpire is a novelty at 168. From the amorphous jumble of challengers, some clarity has been gained, namely because they’re starting to get in the ring together.
Showtime is looking to settle the fascinating ambiguities that remain in the super middleweight ranks—more on that later. Let’s take a look at where the division stands at present and where it might be headed. First, a look at the top fighters:
1. Mikkel Kessler (41-1, 31 KO) – “The Viking Warrior” has been out of action for about nine months now and has only taken on two fairly pedestrian foes since losing to Calzaghe in November, 2007. Nonetheless, he still has a belt, is the most accomplished, and his set of skills is the most complete of anyone campaigning at 168.
2. Lucian Bute (24-0, 19 KO) – Title-holder Bute was lucky to get out of the 12th round against Librado Andrade in October, but was in control through most of the fight. Lucky for the rest of us, Andrade and Bute will go at it again sometime this fall. More...

Former World Light Heavyweight Champion Roy Jones Jr, 53-5 (39), made a successful comeback following his loss to Joe Calzaghe last November with a fifth round stoppage of former super middle world title challenger Omar Sheika, 27-9 (18), at the Civic Center in Jones' hometown of Pensacola, FL.
On the support bill, undefeated cruiserweight contender BJ Flores, 23-0-1 (14), posted a ten rounder over big punching Colombian Jose Luis Herrera, 16-6 (16).
The Playboy Mansion in Beverly Hills, CA saw ex-IBF Light Middle titlist Roman Karmazin, 38-3-1 (24), stop former world middle title challenger Antwun Echols, 31-10-4 (27), in the seventh round at middleweight and middleweight prospect Miguel Angel Espino, 20-2-1 (9), dropped former WBA Light Middle Champ Alejandro Garcia, 26-5-1 (24), twice enroute to a sixth round stoppage win.
