Hanks Victorious On Bronx Knock Out Cancer Boxing Card

By Robert Brizel July 26th, 2011 All Ringside Boxing

Joe DeGuardia's Star Boxing promoted its first annual Knock Out Cancer outdoor boxing card for the American Cancer Society at Hunter's Point Produce Market in the Bronx, all proceeds going to charity.

Four professional bouts, including two title bouts, took place in 100 degree plus heat. A New York State Junior Welterweight title bout between Issouf Kinda and Bayan Jargal did not take place. Jargal was replaced by Bryan Abraham. The pro debut of 3 time Bronx Golden Gloves champion Livingston Joseph was postponed.

In the main event, unbeaten heavyweight Joe 'The Future' Hanks, now 17-0 (11), Newark, New Jersey, won a sound ten round decision over Alfredo 'Salsero' Escalera Jr., now 18-4-1 (12), San Juan Puerto Rico.

Cruiserweight Escalera seems to have trouble in “big fights”, and worse, he cannot fight at heavyweight. Against Hanks, Escalera was fighting in the wrong division.

Escalera, stopped in the eighth round of a vacant WBO NABO cruiserweight title bout with Latif Kayode in August 2010, was not going to win the International Boxing Association heavyweight title in his very next bout. More...

In a thrilling clash tonight for the WBO featherweight title, champion Juan Manuel Lopez had to climb off the canvas to defeat challenger Bernabe Concepcion at Coliseo Jose Miguel Agrelot in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The bout was a slugfest from the start and the massive punching local southpaw soon had Concepcion in dire straits, dropping the Filipino in the very first frame.

But before Lopez could finish off his opponent, Concepcion got in a hail mary that sent the shocked champion to the floor!

Lopez beat the count and in the second, there was no reprieve this time for Concepcion, who was hammered off his feet twice, the second occasion halting the action at 2:37 of the frame. More...

Boxing Preview: Juan Manuel Lopez vs. Bernabe Concepcion

By Alejandro Tostado July 10th, 2010 All Boxing Previews

WBO featherweight ruler Juan Manuel Lopez puts his world title up for grabs this evening against challenger Bernabe Concepcion at San Juan Puerto Rico's Coliseo Jose Miguel Agrelot.

Southpaw Lopez, 28-0 (25), is the heir apparent to Miguel Cotto's domestic superstar status in Puerto Rico as the 27 year old from Caguas has already won seven world title bouts in just over five years as a professional.

The big punching lefty came into his WBO super bantam title challenge against Mexican slugger Daniel Ponce De Leon as the decided underdog in 2008 but left with world honors around his waist after a first round KO victory.

After five successful defenses at 122 pounds, Lopez went up to featherweight where he lifted the WBO crown from highly skilled champion Steven Luevano via a seventh round stoppage in January. More...
