Benavidez Named WBA Boxer of the Month – World Boxing Association
Undefeated American star David Benavidez has been named the World Boxing Association’s Boxer of the Month, an honor recognizing his dominant and successful debut campaign in a new weight class.
The award comes on the heels of Benavidez’s flawless transition to the 200-pound division during his highly anticipated May showdown. The former two-time world champion proved he lost none of the power, intensity, or aggression that made him one of boxing’s most feared fighters, delivering a statement victory over top-tier opposition in Gilberto Ramírez and silencing any doubts about his ability to thrive among the cruisers.
In that May contest, Benavidez once again showcased the relentless style that has become his trademark. From the opening bell, he imposed his will through a suffocating punch output, thudding body combinations, and blazing hand speed that ultimately led to a knockout victory over “Zurdo” Ramírez, who entered the bout as champion. The performance confirmed that Benavidez’s power has carried up in weight and established him as a legitimate threat against the division’s elite.
The WBA also awarded its Honorable Mention of the Month to Japanese champion Naoya Inoue. “The Monster” once again delivered a masterful display in May, defending his titles with a unanimous decision victory that further solidified his standing as one of the sport’s premier pound-for-pound fighters.
With this distinction, the WBA recognizes the exceptional achievements of both Benavidez and Inoue. The Phoenix native has launched a new chapter of his career in spectacular fashion, positioning himself among the leading figures of boxing’s heavier weight classes, while the Japanese superstar continues to strengthen an already remarkable legacy.
