Wilkens Mathieu Stops Esquiva Falcao As Eye Of The Tiger Prospects Shine In Quebec
Wilkens Mathieu was the headline act in Quebec and the unbeaten super middleweight made sure everyone left talking about him. The Canadian prospect dropped veteran Esquiva Falcao before forcing a stoppage in round eight, while several of Eye of the Tiger’s rising names also picked up important victories on the same card.
Main Event
Wilkens Mathieu (15-0-0) retained the NABF Super Middleweight title with an eighth-round TKO over Esquiva Falcao (32-2-0).
Mathieu was comfortably in charge before the finish arrived. The scorecards read 68-65, 70-63 and 70-63 in his favour heading into the final moments, and after sending Falcao to the canvas in round eight the fight was stopped at 3:00 of the round.
Falcao brought plenty of experience and pedigree into the bout, but Mathieu looked stronger and sharper as the fight wore on. It felt like a statement win from one of Canada’s brightest prospects.
Co-Main Event
Mehmet Unal (15-0-0) captured the WBC Continental Americas Light Heavyweight title with a majority decision over Yoann Kongolo (18-3-1) after ten rounds.
This one was tight throughout. Two judges returned 95-95 cards, while the third scored it 96-94 for Unal. Not the most convincing win on paper, but unbeaten records don’t ask how.
Other Title Fights
Moreno Fendero (14-0-0) handled business against Jonathan Gonzalez-Ortiz (21-1-1), winning by TKO in round eight to claim the WBC Continental Americas Super Middleweight title.
The judges had Fendero ahead 70-62 across the board before the stoppage arrived at 1:02 of the eighth. No surprise result here. Fendero was in complete control from the opening bell.
Thomas Chabot (12-1-0) picked up the vacant WBC Continental Americas Featherweight title with a majority decision over Jose Antonio Sampedro (13-2-1).
The judges scored it 95-95, 96-94 and 97-93 after ten rounds. Sampedro made Chabot work for every round, but the Canadian did enough to edge ahead on two of the three cards.
Non-Title Undercard
Leila Beaudoin (14-2-0) completely shut out Paulina Angel (7-2-2), winning a unanimous decision over ten rounds. All three judges scored the contest 100-90.
Erik Israyelyan (5-0-0) needed less than three minutes to get rid of Johan Guzman (2-1-0), scoring a first-round TKO at 2:51.
Daylen Pepin (2-0-0) remained unbeaten with a majority decision over Jordan Dzaba (3-3-1) after four rounds. The scorecards came back 38-38, 39-37 and 39-37.
Closing Thoughts
Mathieu’s stoppage of Falcao was the standout moment of the night, but he wasn’t the only one making noise. Unal added a belt, Fendero continued his rise, and several younger prospects kept their momentum rolling in Quebec.
