Abdullah Mason and Albert Bell Make Weight as Cleveland World Title Double-Header Gets Green Light
Fight night is officially on.
Every fighter successfully made weight ahead of Saturday’s card in Cleveland, Ohio, with Abdullah Mason and Albert Bell both comfortably inside the lightweight limit before their all-Ohio world title clash.
The card also features another world championship bout as Bruce Carrington defends his featherweight crown against unbeaten challenger Rene Palacios, while several unbeaten prospects round out an impressive night of boxing.
Mason and Bell Ready for Familiar Battle
WBO lightweight champion Abdullah Mason tipped the scales at exactly 135lbs, while challenger Albert Bell came in just under the limit at 134.9lbs, officially confirming their title fight.
The contest carries an added layer of intrigue, with the two Ohio natives having shared time in the gym earlier in their careers. There’s mutual respect between them, but neither man hid his confidence during fight week.
Mason has repeatedly spoken about enjoying the opportunity to defend his world title in front of his hometown fans, while Bell has made it clear he isn’t travelling to Cleveland simply to make up the numbers.
“I’m ready to put on a show for my city,” Mason said during fight week, insisting the homecoming only adds to his motivation.
Bell was equally confident, saying he’s prepared to seize the opportunity that arrived after stepping in as a late replacement and believes he’ll leave Cleveland with the WBO belt.
The pair shared an intense final face-off after weighing in, with neither man giving an inch before Saturday night’s main event.
Carrington and Palacios Set for Featherweight Title Clash
WBC featherweight champion Bruce Carrington looked comfortable at 124.9lbs, while unbeaten challenger Rene Palacios weighed 125.7lbs for their world title showdown.
Carrington has looked every bit a future star over the past year, but Palacios has embraced the underdog role throughout fight week. The challenger has suggested people are overlooking him and promised to spoil the champion’s plans in Cleveland.
It has all the makings of an entertaining supporting attraction before the main event.
Unbeaten Prospects Also Make Weight
Tiger Johnson weighed 147lbs ahead of his welterweight contest with fellow unbeaten Christopher Guerrero, who came in at 146.6lbs. With both men protecting undefeated records, it’s one of the most intriguing non-title bouts on the card.
At lightweight, Deric “Scooter” Davis registered 134.3lbs, while experienced opponent Carlos Ramos weighed 134.8lbs.
The Mason family will also have two more representatives in action. Ibrahim Mason came in at 130.3lbs for his super featherweight bout against Erik Hanley, who weighed 129.4lbs.
Meanwhile, Abdurrahman Mason tipped the scales at 133.7lbs, with opponent Alvaro Cabral weighing 134.8lbs for their lightweight contest.
Ready to Go
With every bout officially cleared after the weigh-in, all that’s left is the fighting. Mason will have the hometown crowd behind him, Bell has nothing to lose, and the card is packed with unbeaten talent looking to steal the spotlight. Saturday night in Cleveland should be well worth staying up for.
